Esosa hated saturdays. The morning light came out in little stripes through the curtain. Without opening his eyes he could tell in few minutes he’d be called to start out morning chores. He didn’t mind it though and thought of it only as light exercise.

But today he really wanted an excuse to sleep in. He threw back on the duvet that had found it’s way to the floor during his sleep.

“Eti!”

His mother had already called for his sister and in a few moments either one of the two would come barging into his room.

“Esosa! Are you going to sleep all day? Get up!”

He ignored it. Maybe she’ll give up today and forget he exists.

“If you let me call you again, forget food for the rest of the day”

Esosa groaned and groggily picked himself up. Leaving the bed unmade he walked to open his room door.

Esosa cracked the door open, squinting against the brighter light of the hallway. His mother stood there, hands on her hips, already in her house dress and headscarf.

"Our royal King," she said, pointing a wooden spoon at him. "Our Egede man, the water tank is empty. Softly go fill am."

He nodded, silently regretting choosing to come home. School was on holiday and this spelt stress for him, school was always easier to deal with but here you’d be stuck as a servant for God knows how long. Shuffling past her toward the backyard. As he passed the kitchen, he caught the smell of fried plantains and heard his sister Eti humming off-key.

At least breakfast will be worth it, he thought, grabbing the plastic bucket by the back door.

But as he stepped outside, he froze. The tank wasn't empty it was overflowing. Water spilled down the sides, pooling around the base.

Either Daddy or Paul the gateman had already filled it.

His mother appeared behind him. "What?"

Before she could finish, Eti's voice rang out from inside: "Mummy! Daddy left money on the table! Look!"

His mother clicked her tongue, already turning back inside. "Well, since the water is done, you can go and grind beans in Mama Adaeze's shop."

Esosa's stomach grumbled. But not of hunger.

Mama Adaeze's shop. Adaeze would be around. She always was on saturdays, helping her mother setting one or two things in their little shop.

He really didn’t want to see her. He never could meet her face without blushing and embarrassing himself somehow either opening his mouth and saying something utterly stupid or asking pointless questions to make dry talk.

He groaned again silently though, and grabbed his mother's bean bucket that was filled with washed beans and started the walk outside his family’s compound. In his mind he rehearsed how he'd keep his eyes fixed on the grinding machine this time.

At the end of the month, we give out prizes in 3 categories: Best Content, Top Engagers and
Most Engaged Content.
Best Content
Top Engagers
Most Engaged Content
Best Content
We give out cash prizes to between 7 and 20 community members with the best insights in the past month.
The winners are picked by an in-house selection process.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know for the Best Content track
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
5
Use eye-catching cover images—if your content doesn't attract attention, it's less likely to be read or engaged with.
6
Share your content in your social circles to build engagement around it.
