LET THE LAW DECIDE. Pt1

Heartbreak, the kind that turns the heart of the victim to a heap of regret, is the crime. Eliza Chwandili had loved deeply but now hurts so much more and according to the laws of Jobinza Republic, betrayal of any kind, romantic inclusive, the betrayer is liable to face the wrath of the law. It is on this premise, Eliza had dragged Felix, her ex to court. The courtroom is packed; a visible tell that the case has the interest of many folks. They had come from far and near to follow the court proceedings. Women, out of solidarity for one of their own and men, out of sheer curiosity. It is the morning of Thursday January 19, 2006. The day the case between Eliza and her once-upon-a-time boyfriend, Felix begins. Eliza had refused to let this crime against her heart slide. The case has come to the hallowed chamber of Justice Magunda Bonbi, a no-nonsense disciplinarian, a man in his early sixties and a father of three ladies. Eliza's counsel, it seems, has this case well thought-out because who else could handle a case against injustice against a woman than a man whose prime purpose is to protect his daughters from the likes of Felix Popo. It's 9:50 am; ten minutes before the case kickstarts. Ten minutes before the legal duel that decides Felix's fate commences. The judge walks into the courtroom from the door adjoining the small corridor separating his office from the courtroom. Upon his entrance, silence descends on the room that was drowning in the noise of folks who were eagerly waiting for the commencement of the case. As he makes for his seat, the clerk mouths the familiar order, "All rise". All rise while the Magunda takes his seat and gestures for everyone to sit. Wasting no time, the clerk stands up and reads out the case, "Good morning. This is the Magistrate Court, now in session, the Honorable Judge Bonbi presiding. The matter before the Court is Betrayal of trust, Case Number 419. Counsel and parties, please state your appearances for the record. (Both counsels identify themselves.) Your Honor, the matter is ready to proceed.At the behest of the judge, Barrister DemBaba Kisha, counsel to the plaintiff, swings into action. Barrister Kisha, famous for cases that have sent many men, from paedophiles to rapists to aggressive husbands to prison. It's almost certain Felix is cooked. Her opening statement, at the very least, is enough to prove that, unless Felix's counsel is up for this war of wits, nothing under the sky would stand in his way to prison. She goes thus, "May it please the court. My Lord, this is a case of the heart and like the delicateness of the heart, should be treated with unmistaken precision. This is a case about promise given and promise broken. Your honour, the plaintiff had loved deeply, given absolutely everything necessary for her relationship to work but the recipient of such a sacred gift had not just proven to be a liar but one, our young ladies should be protected from at all costs. The claimant, Miss Eliza Chwandili placed her heart, her trust in the hands of the defendant, Mr. Felix Popo. The relationship between them was not merely one of a platonic nature. It was, matteroffactly, a five year romantic relationship which in every sense, should be close to the expected destination, wedding bells. The evidence will show that the defendant, in a bid to enjoy benefits reserved for a husband, chased the claimant until his actions, which we shall come to find were lies seeped in sugar, lies that unfortunately convinced the claimant that the defendant's words held truth. My Lord, no human should have to go through the haunting experience of realising they had spent a good part of their lives with a fraud.
