Quiet Quitting

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

As of late, Kehinde finds himself questioning his decisions—the kind of decisions that have a tell on people; the kind that may mean absolutely nothing but somehow get depicted as something much more. The kind that could turn the whole world against him. Literally.

Kehinde Adetola is the Head of Class (HOC) at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), with a CGPA of 4.50 and a clean record in Mass Communication.

He never really struggled with his studies. It was almost as though he knew how and where the questions would be set from. Maybe being an HOC came with perks people didn’t know about.

Kehinde had his way with students, lecturers, parents, and people in general. He had a very distinctive personality, and this made so many people look up to him. Even parents would point to him and tell their children, “Be like Kehinde.”

Everything was going smoothly for Kehinde. There was no storm in the calm—or how do they say it?

And he wasn’t even worried because he was a gentle guy, simply going about his day and minding his business.

THEN CAME THE STORM IN THE CALM.

At exactly 3:15 p.m. on a harsh Wednesday afternoon, a fight ensued between Kehinde and one of his colleagues, Faith.

Thank God it wasn’t a physical one. All hell would have broken loose.

It all started with a simple notification.

“Admin added you to Mass Communication 400L Exco Group!”

That was the notification Faith received. She opened WhatsApp to check what it was all about.

The first message she saw was from Kehinde.

“When do we host the award night? Can’t wait to celebrate Faith and the others again this time.”

Emmanuel replied:

“You shouldn’t say that. It’s not nice.”

Faith read the message and replied:

“Hey Kenny,

That comment wasn’t okay. It made me feel some type of way. It wasn’t fair to me, and honestly, I don’t think it’s fair to other people as well.

Whether it was meant as a joke or not, I believe statements like that can make other people’s efforts feel dismissed.”

Kehinde reacted with a laughing emoji.

Then he replied:

“I get you, Faith, and I absolutely know that you wouldn’t have said what you said if Emmanuel hadn’t said anything.”

Faith replied with what felt like a question, but was more like a polished insult.

“Are you daft?

I’ve tried to be calm with you a lot of times, but it seems like you’re taking it for granted. I’ve tried to be quiet. I’ve tried to ignore it, but not anymore.

I really don’t know what or who gave you the audacity to speak to me in this manner. I can see that you’re retarded. Don’t push me, Kenny, because you won’t like it at all.

If you’re smart, you should channel all this energy into something profitable instead of this desperate, pathetic attempt to come for me.

DO NOT PISS ME OFF.”

Everyone who was active in the group at that hour began reacting to Faith’s message.

Some shared their opinions, while others simply continued reacting with different emojis.

Not long after, Kehinde replied.

“It is not your fault, Faith. It isn’t your fault at all. Tell me you weren’t feeling good inside when you read the text. Tell me you weren’t happy.

And what do you mean by ‘Who gave me the audacity to talk to you?’ Man, error! When you want to talk like someone sensible, I’ll be here. You don’t get to insult me and expect me not to talk. You’ll regret it, Faith. I swear you will.”

Faith came back almost immediately.

“Oh, sweetie, I’ve never ever regretted anything in this life except being so unfortunate to cross paths with someone like you.”

Everyone suddenly became hyped by Faith’s response.

The group was alive.

People were reading.

People were reacting.

And somewhere between the insults and the reactions, what started as a simple comment had turned into something much bigger.

“Why is it that I’m always the problem?” Kehinde asked.

Faith replied:

“Isn’t that enough to show that you’re the problem?!

You always have something to say about other people. Always.

Don’t you get tired?”

Kehinde took a while before responding.

The day was getting darker by the minute.

The timestamp read 6:55 p.m.

Then he said:

“I know you’re unfortunate, Faith, but that has nothing to do with me. That’s solely your doing. Do not bring me into this.

You’re a deranged fool, and you’re meant to be in an asylum.

I’ll leave that here for now, and I’ll lock the group. I don’t want to keep talking to you about this.”

Members of the group immediately began questioning his decision.

“Why lock the group?”

“Finish this before you go.”

“Are you scared?”

“Don’t you have anything else to say?”

Kehinde locked the group.

And because he had admin access, he sent one final memo to the chat.

“Hi everyone. In view of what happened tonight, I can clearly see that the majority are against me and my post. As of late, there’s no way this would have turned out like this.

Some say I don’t know when to stop. Some say I take it too far. Some say I speak before I think. Some say I’m insensitive. Some say I don’t even think about other people, only myself. While some think I’m daft nonetheless.

Thank you to everyone.

I have a question for everyone tonight, though.

Should I stay or should I go?”
