Some UK work visas are approved almost every single time

Some UK work visas are approved almost every single time.

Not because they are easy to get.

But because applicants often reach the visa stage after passing earlier filters.

I analysed UK Home Office visa data for African applicants, using records from 2005 to 2025, depending on when each visa route began.

Three work visa routes stand out.

International Sportsperson: 99.6% approval rate

Since 2021, there have been 788 approvals out of 791 issued-or-refused decisions. Applicants must be sponsored by a UK employer and endorsed by the relevant sports governing body before applying.

So by the time the application reaches the Home Office, the applicant has typically already been assessed through the relevant sports system.

Global Talent: 99.3% approval rate

Since 2020, there have been 1,793 approvals out of 1,805 issued-or-refused decisions. A job offer is not required, but most applicants need endorsement from a recognised UK body unless they qualify through an eligible prize.

Again, the applicant usually reaches the visa stage after some form of prior recognition or validation.

Senior or Specialist Worker: 98.2% approval rate

Since replacing the Intra-company Transfer route in 2022, there have been 936 approvals out of 953 issued-or-refused decisions. Applicants need sponsorship from a licensed UK employer for a specific role.

That usually means the employer has already assessed the applicant against the role and route requirements before sponsorship.

These are not one-year anomalies. Each route has maintained a high approval rate throughout the years it has existed.

A pattern emerges.

The UK work visa routes with the highest approval rates are often those where applicants do not arrive at the Home Office stage completely cold.

An employer has sponsored them.

A recognised UK body has endorsed them.

A sports governing body has confirmed their eligibility.

That does not mean these are the easiest visas to qualify for.

In fact, it may mean the opposite.

These routes often attract applicants who are already highly qualified: elite athletes, recognised talents, prize-winners, or employees a company has already invested in relocating.

The data cannot fully separate how much of the high approval rate comes from institutional pre-screening and how much comes from the strength of the applicants themselves.

But it does show one thing clearly:

By the time many applicants submit, they have already passed a major institutional filter of one kind or another.

Methodology: Main applicants only. Approval rate = issued ÷ (issued + refused). Withdrawn and lapsed cases were excluded because they are not clear Home Office yes/no decisions. Route records were used from the year each route appeared in the data, so sample sizes differ by route.
