TELL ME WHY?

She got out of the cab.

Anyone looking closely would have noticed that she wasn't wearing slippers. She walked slowly towards the field, her bare feet touching the cold ground.

She finally got there.

Her destination.

She stared blankly at him for a while before slowly sitting down.

She said nothing.

Neither did he.

A few minutes passed.

“Fredrick, I'm getting tired of staying here all day.”

Silence.

She sighed.

“I'm bored. Can you tell me a story?”

She waited.

Nothing.

“I'd rather you tell me why you saw me at that campus hangout, walking away all lost, and decided to walk me home.”

A faint smile appeared on her lips.

“Tell me why you brought me food every day during my evening classes.”

She paused.

“Tell me why you confessed your feelings to me during our school carnival. You literally sang and dedicated a love song to me. Remember?”

Her voice grew louder.

“No, Fredrick. Tell me why I woke up one morning and found you standing at my doorstep, telling me you couldn't sleep.”

She laughed softly through her tears.

“Tell me, Fredrick, why you couldn't sleep because you said my beauty wouldn't let you.”

Her smile slowly disappeared.

“Tell me why you were almost moved to tears when you saw me hurting from period pain.”

She looked at him.

“Tell me why you'd always apologize first, even when I was the one at fault.”

Her lips began to tremble.

“No…”

She moved closer.

“Fredrick, tell me about it.”

She reached out her hand.

“Tell me about the evening strolls while we licked ice cream.”

Her voice softened.

“Tell me about how we used to watch the sunrise together.”

She smiled faintly through her tears.

“Tell me about the day you almost went crazy because you couldn't reach me for a whole day.”

She swallowed hard.

“Please. Don't just stay silent. I'm begging you. Say something.”

Nothing.

“Tell me why you made me get new pillows when you knew you'd soon be resting in the cold of a coffin.”

Her breath hitched.

“Tell me why you made me get new pyjamas when you knew you'd be wrapped in white linen.”

She stared at him.

Then she laughed bitterly.

“You're a liar, huh?”

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“Tell me why you lied that you couldn't function well without me.”

She shook her head.

“But you're doing just fine.”

Her tears finally fell.

“Why did you make me obsessed with your cuddles when you knew you'd find solitude in the cold hands of death?”

Her voice broke.

“No…”

She held her head.

“No, no, no.”

Then she suddenly looked around.

“What are you guys staring at?”

A few people standing in the distance looked at her strangely.

“Stop staring at me!”

She wiped her tears hurriedly.

“Fredrick is here.”

She turned back to him.

“Tell them you're here, Fredrick.”

Silence.

“Fredrick?”

Nothing.

Her breathing became heavier.

She clutched her chest and broke into a fit of coughing.

“Talk to me.”

She moved closer.

“Please…”

A group of men in white appeared in the distance, walking towards her.

She looked at them.

Then back at Fredrick.

“Fredrick, please…”

Her voice cracked.

“Just tell me. I want to know.”

The men came closer.

She suddenly stood up and ran.

“No!”

They chased after her.

“Leave me alone!”

They caught her.

“No! Let me go!”

She fought against them, screaming and kicking.

“Fredrick must answer!”

“Please!”

She stretched her hands towards him.

“Fredrick must answer me!”

The men held her tightly.

“NOOOOO!”

And as they dragged her away, she kept looking back.

“Fredrick!”

Her voice cracked.

“Fredrick, please!”

Then her eyes fell on what she had been sitting beside all along.

The cold marble.

The flowers.

The picture.

And finally—

the name engraved across the tombstone.

FREDRICK.

She stared at it.

Her lips parted.

“No…”

Her knees gave way.

“Fredrick…”

She began sobbing uncontrollably.

“You don't wanna tell me?”

The men pulled her away.

She screamed one last time.

“FREDRICK MUST ANSWER ME!”

“Fredrick!”

Her voice echoed across the field.

“Fredrick!”

Again.

“Fredrick…”

Her voice grew weaker.

“Fre…”

“Dri…”

“C…”

“K…”

“K…”

“K…”
