The Art of Becoming Lonely

No one wakes up one morning and decides to become lonely. It happens slowly, gradually, like a process.

You stop telling people when something is wrong with you.

You stop reaching out first.

You get used to eating alone, going places alone, keeping your thoughts to yourself.

Maybe this often happen when you feel like no one in the room understands you, or gives you little or no attention, or keep you out of discussions.

And you suddenly think you don't fit in.

And the world is just going by without you.

Eventually, you stop expecting anyone to notice when you're quiet.

And strange enough, being alone becomes easier than explaining why you don't feel okay.

Sometimes, it's not about having nobody around you.

You can be surrounded by people and still feel like nobody truly knows you.

You can always be the first to send a text and expect a reply all day, but nothing comes by the end.

And a day turns to a week, and a week to weeks...then months of strained conversations where it's just 'Hi' and 'Bye'

<del>The pain of being ignored...</del>

And maybe that's the real art of becoming lonely. It's not learning how to be alone, but learning how to need less from people because you've become afraid of being disappointed.

And one day, you realize you've gotten very good at saying “I'm fine.”

Even when you aren't.
