Williams finally discovered that NEPA, generator companies and fuel sellers were not enemies. They were actually business partners operating one of the most successful economic systems in Nigeria.

It all started when Williams complained that NEPA hardly supplied electricity. For weeks, his house was practically in darkness. He couldn't watch television, charge his devices or even sleep comfortably without sweating like someone undergoing punishment.

Eventually, he had no choice but to buy a generator.

The generator dealer smiled as he collected his money.

"Congratulations, sir! You've just purchased your own electricity!"

Williams was happy. He took his new generator home, only to discover that owning a generator was just the beginning of another financial commitment.

He needed petrol.

So he visited the fuel station and bought fuel. Within a few days, the fuel finished. He bought another one. Before long, he had become a regular customer at the filling station.

One afternoon, while calculating his expenses, Williams suddenly had an interesting revelation.

"Wait a minute! So NEPA refuses to give me light, forcing me to buy a generator. The generator cannot work without fuel, so I must keep buying petrol. And because NEPA occasionally brings light, I still have to pay electricity bills so I won't have to run my generator every single day. What kind of business arrangement is this?"

He decided to investigate.

First, he visited the generator dealer.

"Why didn't you tell me that buying a generator would turn me into a permanent customer of fuel stations?"

The dealer laughed.

"Oga Williams, did you expect the generator to run on holy spirit?"

Williams shook his head and proceeded to the filling station.

"Why must I keep buying fuel every week? Don't you people have mercy?"

The attendant replied, "Oga, we are only doing our business. If NEPA gives you steady light, will you come here to buy fuel?"

Williams paused.

"That's actually the problem!"

Finally, he called NEPA.

"Hello! So you people don't give us steady electricity, forcing us to buy generators and fuel, but you still expect us to pay electricity bills?"

The NEPA official calmly replied:

"Mr Williams, you don't seem to understand how the system works. We are not asking you to abandon your generator. We are only asking you to pay your electricity bill so that whenever we give you light, you can enjoy it without having to use your generator."

Williams nearly threw his phone away.

"So basically, I am paying you people to occasionally give me light, while paying generator companies to provide alternative electricity and fuel sellers to keep the alternative running?"

"Exactly, sir. You are beginning to understand."

Williams was speechless.

Then he imagined the secret boardroom meeting between the three business partners.

NEPA: We shall not provide steady electricity.

Generator companies: Excellent! People will have no choice but to buy our generators.

Fuel sellers: Wonderful! And since generators don't run on air, we shall supply the petrol.

NEPA: Don't forget to keep paying your electricity bills, because we may occasionally give you light.

Generator companies: Everybody wins!

Fuel sellers: Everybody wins!

NEPA: Everybody wins!

Williams: WHO IS EVERYBODY?! BECAUSE I AM THE ONE LOSING MONEY HERE!

And that was when Williams finally understood the Nigerian electricity business, and he financing the entire operation!

The most painful part is that even after paying everybody, Williams still has to wake up at night to check whether his generator has enough fuel. 😂😂

In Nigeria, you don't just pay for electricity. You pay for the electricity you don't get, the generator you bought because you didn't get it, and the fuel you need because you bought the generator.

Everybody is in business. Only Williams is in bondage!
