The Bunker — Episode 2

Ellis Reed. That is his name.

I've known him for almost seven years now. He was the last addition to Sector Number Three.

I can only watch as the two guards drag him down the corridor. His hands are restrained behind his back and there is blood at the corner of his mouth.

I've never like the authorities. They handle everyone the same way—cruel— even the weak ones.

"I heard he tried to open the exterior gate." Someone whispered behind me.

"Maybe he was infected."

"Oh shit! The whole of Sector Number Three will have to be quarantined."

That was a direct jab at us, I know. But infected? It was the word nobody liked hearing.

The infected were the reason we lived underground. The infected were the reason the surface was forbidden. The infected were there reason we had rules...

...Again, as we were told.

Ellis didn't look infected. He looked scared.

Maya's face had gone completely pale. She grabbed my wrist and pulled me back to the dining hall.

The red lights were gone and everyone already settled again, like nothing happened just a while ago.

But that was how things worked here. When someone breaks a rule, you don't ask questions. You pretend you don't know them and go back to your normal life. <del>Like any of this is even normal.</del>

Sometimes, the person returns after a few days. Sometimes they don't.

And nobody asks, because nobody wants to know.

...

Whispers followed Maya and I the moment we entered the classroom.

"People from Sector Three are always causing problems."

"I never liked them anyway. I wish they'll just get them all confined."

"Are we safe sitting in the same room with them? You know...what if they are already infected?"

Maya's shoulder stiffened and I turn toward the voices.

"If you have something to say, then say it louder."

Maya grabbed my sleeve and I took my seat beside her.

"Bree, don't," she said.

"Don't what? Are we just going to let them talk shit about us all the time?"

She shook her head slightly and I see that look of pity in her eyes. God! I hate what that means.

"Look around. We are the only loose screws here. We've always been. And now you are only giving them more to believe."

I ignored everything but the anger remained. It has been there since I saw Ellis being dragged away.

He is being punished for something nobody is willing to explain properly, and everyone already decided he deserved it.
