The Bunker — Episode 4

Maya started giving me the silent treatment. I can’t understand what she seems to be so mad about. Was it the truth? Or was it just me?

For the rest of the day, I watched her disappear into the crowd and interact with others not from our sector. And by the time everyone went to their rooms at the end of the day, she went straight to bed.

I watched her sleep with her back turned to me. It was so painful to watch.

I sat on the bed and listened to the endless whirring. Sometimes I try to figure out where the sound was coming from, but it’s just everywhere.

“Maya?” I finally called.

She didn’t respond or react, but I know she’s pretending to sleep. I know how she sleeps.

I continued, “I’m sorry about earlier. You didn’t need to pretend you were friends with the other sectors by the way. I’m sure they talked down on you. And it’s my fault, I know.”

I went silent for a while and spoke again, “You know Ellis is not the one to just decide one day to walk out through those gates. He wouldn’t do that. And I know you don’t want to hear it, but what if they really are lying to us, hmn?”

I swallowed the lump that now formed in my throat and said the words I’ve been trying so hard to ignore. “He’s gone, Maya. I’m afraid he’s not coming back.”

Tears spilled from my eyes and I tried so hard to swallow the sobs. I wished there was someone, a mother, maybe, to comfort me. Someone who can understand me…

Maya finally turned and looked at me. I wiped the tears immediately and watch her sit up.

She stared at me for some seconds before saying, “Ellis is afraid of the surface.”

“What?” I asked with pulled brows and sniffed back. “Then today, why would he…”

“I don’t know either. But he told me once, a few months ago. It was something about his mother.” She pulled her blanket over her legs. “You remember the story, don’t you?”

Of course, I remember. Before Ellis was brought to our sector, something happened to his mother. I only know they said she broke a law and had to be punished for it, but during lock up, an infection broke out and she died in confinement.

“How does that relate?” I ask her.

“His mother worked in medical and did some experiments. They were trying to find a solution on how humans can survive outside of this bunker, but the experiments failed. The serum got out and people got infected. She couldn’t live with it so she injected herself too and died in confinement. Do you know where those bodies went to?”

I shake my head.

“The surface,” she said. “She must have mutated with the monsters out there and is wandering around. Ellis is scared that he’ll see her the day he decides to leave this bunker and be forced to take her down.”

“But…h-how do you know this?” I ask her. It’s strange that she has all this information and I don’t.

“I heard it today,” she said. “Those idiots were talking about how he missed his mother and wanted to see her. So you see I wasn’t making new friends. I was eavesdropping since you have been persistent.”

_

Spoiler Alert: I'm about to kill someone off 👀. This is dragging on than necessary
