The generation that stopped having kids

Is parenthood losing its appeal, or is society making it harder for us to even consider having children? Honestly, I feel it’s both.

We live in a society where inflation is rising at an alarming rate, job opportunities are becoming increasingly difficult to find, and starting a business is a whole challenge on its own. We do not live in a particularly favourable society, and I feel frustrated whenever people choose to have children when they aren’t ready to provide for them financially, emotionally, physically, and mentally.

At some point, children are forced to start fending for themselves because their parents simply cannot provide the support they need. And I often wonder: what is the point of bringing a child into the world if you are not prepared to give them the care, stability, and support they deserve?

I also think this is part of why parenthood is losing its appeal. A lot of people grew up in dysfunctional homes. Sometimes the dysfunction was financial; other times, it was emotional, physical, or a combination of several things. Growing up in an environment like that can be enough to make someone question whether they ever want to become a parent themselves.

We were also never really taught to enjoy our youth. Many of us were raised with a predetermined idea of what life was supposed to look like: go to school, get a job, get married, have children, and repeat the cycle. But our generation is beginning to see things differently, and honestly, I love that.

We are learning to question the things we were taught to accept without thinking. We are beginning to understand that life is more than simply following a prescribed timeline.

Have a life of your own, experience things, heal, build yourself, find stability. Understand who you are and what you want out of life before deciding to bring another life into it.

Parenthood should be a choice made with intention, not simply a milestone we feel obligated to reach.
