Your mother was terrified. She took you away and tried to protect you from the truth.”</p><p><br/></p><p>I looked at Ethan.</p><p><br/></p><p>“And you?”</p><p><br/></p><p>He lowered his eyes.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I knew Lena survived.”</p><p><br/></p><p>My chest tightened.</p><p><br/></p><p>“You knew?”</p><p><br/></p><p>“She made me promise not to tell you until she was ready.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“Why didn't you tell me?”</p><p><br/></p><p>“Because the person who threatened Lena was still looking for the evidence.”</p><p><br/></p><p>I looked back at Lena.</p><p><br/></p><p>“So why now?”</p><p><br/></p><p>She smiled sadly.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Because the evidence is finally safe.”</p><p><br/></p><p>A noise came from upstairs.</p><p><br/></p><p>We all froze.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then we heard footsteps.</p><p><br/></p><p>Mrs. Cole.</p><p><br/></p><p>She appeared at the top of the stairs.</p><p><br/></p><p>“You really should have left that room alone.”</p><p><br/></p><p>She started walking down.</p><p><br/></p><p>Ethan stepped forward.</p><p><br/></p><p>“It's over.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Mrs. Cole laughed.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Is it?”</p><p><br/></p><p>Lena held up the recorder.</p><p><br/></p><p>“You're finished.”</p><p><br/></p><p>For the first time, Mrs. Cole looked afraid.</p><p><br/></p><p>She turned to run.</p><p><br/></p><p>But the police were already outside.</p><p><br/></p><p>Ethan had called them.</p><p><br/></p><p>Mrs. Cole was arrested before she could escape.</p><p><br/></p><p>And just like that, seven years of silence finally ended.</p><p><br/></p><p>Later that evening, I stood outside Room 17.</p><p><br/></p><p>The door was open.</p><p><br/></p><p>For the first time, it didn't frighten me.</p><p><br/></p><p>Lena stood beside me.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I’m sorry,” I whispered.</p><p><br/></p><p>She looked at me.</p><p><br/></p><p>“You were a child.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“I still locked the door.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“Yes.”</p><p><br/></p><p>She reached for my hand.</p><p><br/></p><p>“And you came back to open it.”</p><p><br/></p><p>I looked at her.</p><p><br/></p><p>“What happens now?”</p><p><br/></p><p>She smiled.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Now you remember.”</p><p><br/></p><p>She walked away.</p><p><br/></p><p>I stayed there for a while.</p><p><br/></p><p>Then I looked inside Room 17 one last time.</p><p><br/></p><p>The room was empty.</p><p><br/></p><p>But somehow, it no longer felt haunted.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because I finally understood something.</p><p><br/></p><p>The girl in Room 17 had never come back to frighten me.</p><p><br/></p><p>She came back because I had forgotten the truth.</p><p><br/></p><p>And sometimes, the person we spend years trying to escape...</p><p><br/></p><p>is simply the version of ourselves we were too afraid to remember.</p><p><br/></p><p>The end.</p><p>Thanks for reading 🥰</p><p><br/></p>
