The village Alpha fell from his bed, blood streaming from his nose. Pack warriors dropped to their knees, unable to breathe. Across the kingdom, wolves began howling at the sky. The baby cried once. Every window in Mara's cottage shattered. Selene screamed, grabbed a pillow, and lunged toward the newborn. "That thing must die before sunrise!" Mara, weak and trembling, snatched a knife from the bedside table. "Touch my son, and I'll cut your throat!" Selene stopped. Before she could speak, the cottage door exploded inward. A dozen armed warriors stormed inside, followed by a tall man wearing a black cloak. His golden eyes glowed, and a silver scar ran down the side of his face. Alpha Ronan Blackthorne. The most feared werewolf ruler in the western territories. He had hunted an ancient creature for twenty years, and now he stood before the one thing that could destroy his kingdom. Ronan approached the bed. Then, to everyone's horror, he dropped to one knee before the newborn. "My king," he whispered. Mara stared at him. "What are you doing?" Ronan lifted his head, his eyes filled with tears. "Protecting the only creature powerful enough to end us all." Suddenly, the baby stopped crying. He turned his black eyes toward Mara and smiled.
