THE HIDDEN COST OF ENTERTAINMENT

I pant heavily as the weight of it all crushes down on me.

I run as fast as my legs can take me. I am tired. I breathe because that is the loudest I can speak.

Tears of regret stream down my face as I remember how it all started.

I loved it all.

It was new, and it gave me peace.

I ran to it whenever there was a problem I could not solve. I let it hug me when the storm raged. It became my cover at night when I did not want to think about the hard truth before me.

There are different things that entertain the human race.

Mine was the screen.

Scrolling.

Anything and everything that shines light on the face.

I laughed.

I cried.

I became emotional.

I danced to the rhythm of everything that appeared before the screen.

I mourned with the dead. I danced with the excited. I frowned with the angered. I rejoiced with the one in love.

For a moment, I lived a thousand lives without leaving my spot.

I thought I was living.

I did not know I was slowly disappearing from my own life.

What was once new became familiar, and what became familiar soon became an addict.

Its chains wrapped around my neck as it dragged me across the cold floor.

I struggled.

But each time, its seduction won me over.

Just one more scroll.

One more episode.

One more video.

One more laugh.

One more escape from the life waiting for me outside the screen.

And then I looked at myself.

I had no value left in the things I stared at.

Everything was just a worthless screen, yet it was draining the value I had once built before I met it.

The dreams I once chased were now waiting for me in silence.

The time I once had was gone.

The person I once wanted to become was standing somewhere behind me, wondering when I stopped running towards her.

I called it entertainment.

But what do you call something that takes your time, steals your attention, weakens your discipline and leaves you emptier than it found you?

Another might call it cruelty.

Because it has no real comfort.

It is only a fling of time.

And sometimes, you do not realise what it has cost you until you finally turn around… and realise how deeply you have buried yourself.
