But he was the one who discovered you were pregnant.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya looked at Daniel.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Then why did you say you found out?”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel's face fell.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Because I did. But the doctor told me first.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Everything suddenly became clear.</p><p><br/></p><p>The messages.</p><p><br/></p><p>The photograph.</p><p><br/></p><p>The hospital.</p><p><br/></p><p>The secrets.</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya looked at Amara.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Then who has been sending me the messages?”</p><p><br/></p><p>Amara took a breath.</p><p><br/></p><p>“The doctor.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“Why?”</p><p><br/></p><p>“Because Daniel asked him to.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya turned toward Daniel.</p><p><br/></p><p>“What?”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel looked exhausted.</p><p><br/></p><p>“After you woke up, I asked him to keep your medical records private. I didn't want anyone using what happened against you.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“But why would he contact me now?”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel reached into his bag and pulled out an envelope.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I received this two weeks ago.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya opened it.</p><p><br/></p><p>Inside was a copy of the original accident report.</p><p><br/></p><p>But there was something else.</p><p><br/></p><p>A handwritten note.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong><em>You deserve the truth. All of it.</em></strong></p><p><br/></p><p>Maya looked up.</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel finally told her everything.</p><p><br/></p><p>He had been driving that night.</p><p><br/></p><p>He had been drinking.</p><p><br/></p><p>He had lost control of the car.</p><p><br/></p><p>His brother hadn't been driving.</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel had lied because he was terrified of losing his freedom, his future, and Maya.</p><p><br/></p><p>But after the accident, he couldn't live with what he'd done.</p><p><br/></p><p>His brother had wanted him to confess.</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel refused.</p><p><br/></p><p>And that was why his brother disappeared.</p><p><br/></p><p>Not because he was guilty.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because he was angry.</p><p><br/></p><p>He had spent months watching Daniel make one bad decision after another—lying about the accident, hiding the pregnancy, ending his relationship with Maya, and convincing himself that all of it was love.</p><p><br/></p><p>The messages were his brother's attempt to force Daniel to finally tell the truth.</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya sat quietly.</p><p><br/></p><p>“So the last message…”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel nodded.</p><p><br/></p><p>“That was from him.”</p><p><br/></p><p>She looked at the screen.</p><p><em><br/></em></p><p><strong><em>You still don't know the worst part.</em></strong></p><p><br/></p><p>Maya laughed softly through her tears.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I think I finally do.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel looked at her.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Are you leaving?”</p><p><br/></p><p>She thought about it.</p><p><br/></p><p>She thought about the accident.</p><p><br/></p><p>The baby.</p><p><br/></p><p>The lies.</p><p><br/></p><p>The man she had loved.</p><p><br/></p><p>The man who had tried so desperately to protect her that he had taken away every opportunity she had to choose for herself.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I don't know.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel nodded.</p><p><br/></p><p>And for once, he didn't try to convince her.</p><p><br/></p><p>He didn't ask her to stay.</p><p><br/></p><p>He didn't tell her that everything would be okay.</p><p><br/></p><p>He simply said:</p><p><br/></p><p>“Whatever you decide, I'll respect it.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya looked at him.</p><p><br/></p><p>“That,” she whispered, “is the first decision you've let me make for myself.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel smiled sadly.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I know.”</p><p><br/></p><p>She reached for his hand.</p><p><br/></p><p>Not because everything was fixed.</p><p><br/></p><p>It wasn't.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some things couldn't be undone.</p><p><br/></p><p>The accident couldn't be erased.</p><p><br/></p><p>The baby couldn't be brought back.</p><p><br/></p><p>The lies couldn't be forgotten overnight.</p><p><br/></p><p>And love, no matter how strong, couldn't magically make any of that disappear.</p><p><br/></p><p>But perhaps forgiveness wasn't about pretending the pain never happened.</p><p><br/></p><p>Perhaps it was about deciding what you wanted to do with the pain after it happened.</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya squeezed his hand.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I don't know what happens next.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“Neither do I.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“And I'm still angry.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“You should be.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“And I don't know if I can trust you again.”</p><p><br/></p><p>“I understand.”</p><p><br/></p><p>She looked at him for a long moment.</p><p><br/></p><p>“But I don't want our last message to be the end.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daniel's eyes filled with tears.</p><p><br/></p><p>“What do you want it to be?”</p><p><br/></p><p>Maya smiled faintly.</p><p><br/></p><p>“A beginning.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Not a promise.</p><p><br/></p><p>Not forgiveness.</p><p><br/></p><p>Not happily ever after.</p><p><br/></p><p>Just a beginning.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because sometimes the hardest part of loving someone isn't deciding whether to stay.</p><p><br/></p><p>It's accepting that love alone cannot undo the past.</p><p><br/></p><p>And sometimes the most important message isn't the one that ends a relationship.</p><p><br/></p><p>It's the one that finally tells the truth.</p><p><br/></p>
