She had never expected things between them to go this far. In fact, she had planned to end their relationship that evening. She had come to the date intending to tell Mike everything. But when she arrived and saw what he had prepared, she couldn't bring herself to do it. She decided she would wait until after the date. The phone call came before she had the chance. Mike listened quietly. Then he asked her one question. "Why are you doing this to yourself?" Sarah couldn't answer. Mike looked at her. "You are married. You have two children. Why then are you doing this to yourself?" Sarah lowered her eyes. There was nothing more to say. The date ended there. Mike called Kevin to come and get him. Kevin arrived not long after, and on their way home, he tried to calm his friend down. He was shocked by what had happened and expected Mike to be angry. But Mike remained unusually calm. Then he said something Kevin never expected. "Sarah was lost." Kevin looked at him. Mike continued. "And she has finally found herself." He looked out through the window. "She went back to her family." Then Mike smiled. "So this is what I have been looking for all along." Kevin was silent. Mike had spent so much time thinking about himself that he had overlooked the importance of experiencing life with other people. Sarah had taught him something he couldn't have learned by simply staying in his room and thinking about who he was supposed to become. He realized that love could bring happiness, but it could also bring pain. People could enter your life unexpectedly, change something inside you, and leave you with a lesson you never knew you needed. Mike decided not to let the fire of love that had been lit in his heart die. Instead, he wanted to become more involved with the world than ever before. He wanted to experience its joy and its sorrow. A few days later, Mike bought himself a diary. He began writing about his experiences, the people he met, and the things life had taught him. At the end of one of the pages, he wrote: "The process of self-discovery cannot be achieved by oneself alone, but through our relationship and experiences with the world and the people around us." Mike closed the diary. The search was over. Or perhaps it had only changed into something else.
