The Mirror.

I hate...

To see you blame yourself for flaws you didn't create.

                                                    - James Ochanya

I wrote this poem because I was overwhelmed by the hatred I had developed for the mirror. I had broken several mirrors out of anger and sadness over the way I looked. But eventually, I realized that the mirror was never the problem.

I was born the way I was. The mirror was simply showing me reality, the truth of what I looked like, not the version of myself I had expected or wished to see. So, why did I hate the mirror for reflecting the truth?

Society has taught us to see beauty through a particular standard. We are constantly shown what beauty is supposed to look like: a certain skin tone, body shape, facial features, hair, and overall appearance. So when we look into the mirror and realize that we do not fit that standard, we begin to feel inadequate.

Perhaps the mirror never made us hate ourselves. Perhaps it only revealed the difference between who we are and who society told us we should be.
