THE PRESSURE TO HAVE YOUR LIFE FIGURED OUT

I’m sure that we all have been under this pressure and most likely still are.

So, as a person, most of the time, this pressure comes from the part of one’s life that is most important to them. The first line of pressure comes from the family. Some might not know this, but it actually does. The urge to be the one your siblings look up to, the one your parents talk about positively different levels of pressure come from one’s family. Then others may relatively come from friends and society. This is so because, outside the family, these are the two immediate parts that influence one’s thoughts and urge them on the things they want to achieve. This depends on the kind of society you grow up in, whether it is one where there are big people who thrive or one where there isn’t one that is actually better than the other. One way or the other, these two parts would actually make you want to have your life figured out, so that you’ll know the paths to follow towards whatever level of greatness you want to accomplish.

And as e Dey be so, Ehn, my people, the internet, as we all know, adds to this pressure as well. As a matter of fact, it adds highly in this Gen-Z era that we are in because most of our youths are pressured by what they see online, which may just be for the plot of it for the creator of the content.

And because of these aspects, one might feel behind when they see someone in their age range doing better than them. You go just Dey reason say, “Shey this person get two head, Abi na wetin sef?” You’ll ask yourself that question for as many times as you see people like that.

In this era we are in, people mostly believe now that if you don’t know what you’re doing at the age of 20, then you never really ready for life because it’s no longer that a fool at 40 is a fool forever. Now Ehn, a fool at 20 is a fool forever. 20 years don commot for the equation oo. They believe that you should already know everything you want and start working for it, and at 25 years, progress should be seen, when it’s not actually like that.

This pressure, as low as it may seem to the ears, plays big parts in our lives and makes people take actions that they end up regretting most of the time.

This pressure could be a drive, and it could be a ticking time bomb. One that would be making you think that, “Ehn, if you no make am now, you no fit ever make am oo.” An instance, one which is very popular, is a student who wants to study Mass Communication but, because of the pressure from home and other aspects, picks Law because society and everyone else thinks it’s more profitable. This student goes through the hard process to achieve this goal to prove that they know the best choice, meanwhile, that wasn’t their only choice.

This can affect one in different ways because that place wey you feel say bread Dey, naim stone fit full. It might end up being that Mass Communication is the course that would lead this student to actual greatness, and they might end up figuring that out after spending a year or more studying Law. And they might end up changing it or figuring out a way to live with the regret that they couldn’t or didn’t do it.

You go just Dey reason say, “Chaii, if I change this course now, I don waste time oo. See Sandra and Chinese Dey do well here with no second thoughts. Ehn, if I change this course now, e go be like say all of them better pass me and like say I no know wetin I want, and e no go sharp for people eyes oo. So make I kuku Dey here abeg. Anything wey wan sup, make e sup. There’s no time, no waste time.”

This mindset pushes one to live with decisions that may end up not being favourable to them.

As it is, one thing we should all believe is that you can’t have everything figured out at these ages. Even those who are in those places that we aspire to be it

took some of the great people we have today a lot of trial-and-error processes. Some still don’t even have it all figured out; they are just working on what goes with them.

But I think one of the problems we have today is that nobody wants to wait. They prefer to move faster rather than waiting and trying things out little by little because most of them are easily influenced or led on by the achievements they see among their peers.

Though it is good for you to see something good that someone did and be encouraged to do better, before you go on the journey, ask yourself:

How long did it take them to get there?

What did they sacrifice?

How hardworking were they?

Did they fail at all?

Were there things that affected them along the way?

Can I do those things as well?

Am I capable?

Can I continue rising no matter how many times I fall?

These questions would help you know whether you can do those things because Ehn, if not, your mind go Dey oo.

Your twenties can be for self-discipline and discovery. That means you just have to take things one step at a time to discover what works for you and how you’ll work towards them in the coming future.

This means that if you’re not really sure what to do, you pick a selected option. By this, I mean a good possible option, and then zero them down to the most preferable one. Maybe at least start from there and see where it takes you.

Happy last Sunday of August my people of Twocents✨
