The Things We Feel But Never Say

There are things we feel so deeply that somehow, putting them into words makes them feel less real.

There are so many things we feel but never say.

Not because we don't want to say them, but because sometimes we don't know how. Sometimes we're scared of what saying them might change. Sometimes we don't want to look vulnerable. And sometimes, we're not even sure if what we're feeling makes sense.

So we say them silently to ourselves, late at night, in our heads.

“I miss you.”

“You hurt me.”

“I'm proud of you, but I wish I was where you are.”

"I need you.”

“I'm not okay.”

“I wish things were different.”

We don't always say when we're hurt.

Sometimes we laugh it off, act normal, and tell people “it's fine” because explaining why it hurt feels more exhausting than pretending it didn't.

We don't always say when we miss someone.

Pride, distance, circumstances, or simply the fear that they don't miss us back can make us keep those three words to ourselves.

We don't always say when we're jealous.

And jealousy doesn't necessarily mean we don't want someone else to succeed. Sometimes their success simply reminds us of something we desperately want for ourselves.

We don't always say when we're tired.

Not physically tired. The kind of tired that makes you want to disappear for a while without having to explain why.

We don't always say when we need someone.

Because needing someone can feel like weakness when we've spent so much time trying to convince everyone — including ourselves that we're fine.

And sometimes, we don't say things simply to stay on people's good side.

We swallow our true thoughts to keep the peace. We hold back our disagreements, our frustrations, even our honest opinions, because we're scared of being misunderstood, disliked, or seen as difficult. So we smile, nod, and let the moment pass not because we don't care, but because we're afraid of what honesty might cost.

But the truth is, the words are always there. We just hide them.

“I miss you, but I don't want to bother you.”

“That actually hurt me, but I'm scared you'll think I'm being dramatic.”

“I'm proud of you, but a small part of me wishes I was where you are.”

“I need you, but I don't want to become a burden.”

“I'm tired, but I don't know how to ask for help.”

“I disagree with you, but I don't want to make things uncomfortable.”

We carry these words around like little secrets, hoping somehow the people they're meant for will understand them without us having to say them.

Maybe that's one of the strange things about being human: we can feel so much and still say so little.

We become experts at saying “I'm fine” when we're anything but fine.

Maybe we should start saying the things we mean a little more often. Maybe someone needs to hear “I miss you,” or “I'm proud of you,” or even “I'm not okay.”

Because sometimes, the things we never say are the things that needed to be said the most.
