Why Everybody Should Watch Friends 1

Coz no one told you life was gonna be this way.

Firstly, one minute of silence for Matthew Perry, our beloved Chandler. You will forever be missed.

What a crazy way to start a show! Five young adults are hanging out at Central Perk, and romantically, nothing seems to be going well for most of them. To make matters worse, Ross's wife had just left him. She's a lesbian, and they're going through a divorce. And just when you think things couldn't get any worse, Rachel walks in wearing her wedding dress.

I watched Friends in 2023, and ever since then, I've been watching clips of it. It's a comedy centred around the lives of six young adults figuring life out together.

The ten-season sitcom explores friendship, family, careers, loss, love, romance, and change. As I grow older, I find myself becoming more aware of these life changes and how much we need people around us. Not people who will always criticise us or tell us what to do, but people who will witness us navigate these changes while supporting, loving, and choosing us, even when they don't approve of some of our decisions.

Monica: The Friend Who Makes Room for You

Rachel settles in with Monica, a control freak who is often described as high-maintenance. Phoebe even had to secretly move out of their apartment at one point because living with Monica could make you feel like you couldn't do anything right.

But that's not the whole story. Monica is deeply caring, passionate, and hospitable. She takes in an old high school friend who shows up in a wedding dress with no real plan for what comes next. She makes room for Rachel, even though Rachel has no job, no money of her own, and no idea how to navigate the life ahead of her.

Monica is also figuring things out herself. She struggles with her career and love life, dates her father's friend, and later dates a very wealthy man. Eventually, she finds love in Chandler, someone who has been her friend all along.

Monica reminds us that people can have difficult personalities and still have beautiful hearts. Sometimes, the people who love us deeply are not always the easiest people to live with.

Chandler: The Funny Guy With a Soft Heart

Chandler was the humour guy. We loved him for his jokes and sarcasm, but more than that, we loved the loyal friend he was to Joey and the compassionate husband he became to Monica.

The scene where he talks about Monica as they prepare to adopt a baby remains goated. It's one of those moments that makes you appreciate how much he loves her. For someone who often uses humour to deflect from uncomfortable feelings, seeing him express himself so sincerely is beautiful.

He loves maintaining Monica.

But Chandler has his rough edges. He's stuck in a job that pays well but doesn't make him happy. His on-and-off relationship with Janice goes on for longer than most of us would probably tolerate. And when he falls in love with Monica, he struggles with what to do with those feelings and how to commit.

His story reminds us that being the funny friend doesn't mean you don't have your own struggles. Sometimes, the person making everybody laugh is also trying to figure out their own life.

Joey: The Hustler and the Friend Who Shows Up

Joey is the hustler, the one with big dreams who doesn't always know how to achieve them. He's an aspiring actor navigating an industry where success is unpredictable. He goes for auditions, gets rejected, and keeps trying.

His love life is nothing to write home about, either. Sometimes, it feels like he's using casual relationships to fill a deeper emotional void. But underneath all that is a man who loves his friends.

Talk about a friend who shows up!

Joey is generous, loyal, and protective of the people he loves. His friendship with Chandler is one of the highlights of the show. They share an apartment, a pet, countless ridiculous experiences, and a bond that survives disagreements and changes.

Joey reminds us that friendship isn't just about having someone to talk to. It's also about having someone who will show up for you, sometimes without even needing to be asked.

Phoebe: Everybody Needs a Phoebe

Phoebe has all my heart.

She grew up in difficult circumstances, experienced considerable hardship, and yet retained such a sweet heart. Her childhood was far from ideal, but she didn't allow it to take away her capacity to love and care for others.

She becomes a surrogate mother for her brother, carrying triplets for him and his wife. She makes art, no matter how terrible some of her creations are. She lives on her own terms and remains devoted to her friends.

One thing I love about Phoebe is how she sees things differently from everybody else. She doesn't always follow conventional expectations, and she's often the person willing to say what everyone else is thinking.

The part where she speaks to Joey about the state of their friendship is particularly memorable. Sometimes, we need someone who can help us see what we feel but haven't quite figured out how to express.

Everybody needs a Phoebe. Someone who will tell you the truth, make you question your assumptions, and help you understand yourself a little better.

Rachel could certainly testify to that, especially during her pregnancy reveal.

Ross: The Romantic Who Never Quite Gets It Right

Ross is a palaeontologist, a career his friends don't always seem to understand or appreciate. His marriage falls apart when his wife, Carol, comes out as a lesbian, leaving him heartbroken and navigating life as a single father.

And then there's Rachel, whom he has loved since they were younger. Their on-and-off relationship becomes one of the show's central storylines, and, honestly, I have a lot to say about it. But we'll get to that.

Despite his flaws, Ross has a kind heart.

He buys Phoebe a pink bicycle because she never had one as a child, and he teaches her how to ride it. It's such a sweet gesture, especially because he doesn't have to do it. He simply wants to give his friend something she missed out on growing up.

Ross experiences heartbreak, divorce, the challenges of co-parenting, and the uncertainty of love. He doesn't always handle these experiences well, but he keeps trying to find his footing.

His story reminds us that life doesn't always turn out the way we planned. Sometimes, we have to start over, learn to live with disappointment, and figure out how to move forward.

Rachel: The Rich Girl Who Had to Start Over

Rachel is the rich girl who runs away from her wedding and suddenly has to learn how to live independently.

She goes from relying on her family's money to getting a job, paying her bills, and building a career. She learns to take responsibility for herself and makes her way through the complications of adult relationships.

Rachel surprised me with her resilience. She wasn't always the most responsible person at the beginning, and she certainly had a lot to learn. But she grew.

She made mistakes, experienced disappointments, and worked her way up in her career. She also became a good friend, showing up for the people who mattered to her.

Her story is a reminder that sometimes, the life we run away from is the life we discover we never really wanted. Starting over can be frightening, but it can also be the beginning of becoming the person you were meant to be.

So, Why Should Everybody Watch Friends?

The first episode aired in 1994. Thirty-two years later, we are still dealing with similar struggles: work, family pressure, love, purpose, and the feeling that everything is pulling us in different directions.

Nobody really has to do life alone.

We all make messy decisions. We all have embarrassing moments, experience heartbreak, and occasionally find ourselves in situations we never imagined we'd be in. Sometimes, we make terrible decisions and have to live with the consequences.

But the people who are truly our friends don't disappear just because life gets messy. They don't have to agree with every decision we make, but they remain present. They love us, challenge us, laugh with us, and sometimes tell us things we don't want to hear.

In a world where we celebrate independence so much that we sometimes lose friendships over the smallest disagreements, Friends gives us six people who keep choosing one another.

They don't always get it right. They argue, disagree, hurt each other's feelings, and sometimes make questionable decisions. But they keep coming back to one another.

And perhaps that's the beauty of it. Friendship isn't about finding perfect people. It's about finding people with whom you can be imperfect and still be loved.

I definitely don't think Ross and Rachel should have ended up together. Don't ask me why; I just don't think that's what love should look like.

And Chandler and Monica? Their love story started with good sex, and the Christian girl in me has some reservations about that. But I can't deny that watching their friendship develop into something deeper was beautiful.

Ultimately, you don't watch Friends because it has all the answers. You watch it because it makes you laugh, gives you characters to root for, and reminds you that life is a little easier when you have people to share it with.

You'll enjoy the comedy, the ridiculous situations, the questionable decisions, and the beautiful friendships.

And may you have friends who will always be there for you.
