A fortune for Fortune

“Fortune cookies?”

“Yes, fortune cookies!”

“500?”

“Yup. How much?”

Ejima didn’t have to be present to gauge the man’s reaction. She could imagine the shock, the raised eyebrows, maybe a head shake and a comment about her Nigerian accent. She didn’t care. Everything was going to be perfect.

He had been her best friend for years. They did everything together, even moving to the UK. He knew everything about her and she knew everything about him, and she had come to the conclusion that they belonged together.

He was coming to visit her on his birthday, and three days ago, he had called and said they needed to talk. Ejima hadn’t slept since. She knew what he wanted to talk about: how she had been avoiding him, but she had plans to take the conversation elsewhere.

Everything was planned to the T. He was going to walk in, see her decorations, profess his undying love, move in, marry her and have beautiful babies.

Foolproof.

So, three days later, she stood in the middle of a room decorated with five hundred fortune cookies floating from the ceiling, his name, “Fortune,” written in gold glitter paper behind her, as Fortune walked into her house.

The look of awe on his face stunned her, until she noticed the strange woman beside him.

Time and space seemed to blur as Fortune introduced the woman as his girlfriend. Ejima didn’t know how she was able to smile and hug the lady, play hostess, or keep the conversation going till the end of the night. She couldn’t even remember the subject of the conversation.

After they left, she collapsed on her floor and cried. She found herself in a sea of fortune cookies before she decided to open one.

“You’re in for a pleasant surprise,” it said.

Now, Ejima couldn’t stop laughing.
