A Night Under The Lights

There is something strange about a city at night.

The streets are darker, yet somehow everything seems more visible.

The buildings disappear into the sky, but the windows begin to speak. Cars pass like brief thoughts. Streetlights stand quietly over roads that have carried thousands of people home.. and watched thousands more pretend they were going somewhere.

And then there is you.

Standing underneath all those lights, looking perfectly fine.

That is the strange thing about lights.

They were invented to help us see, but sometimes they only show us what we have been trying not to notice.

A person can walk through a crowded street and still feel like the loneliest thing in it.

You can be surrounded by conversations and have an entire universe trapped behind your teeth.

You can smile at someone beneath a bright streetlight while carrying a darkness they would never recognize in daylight.

Maybe that is why some people love the night.

Not because it is dark.

Because nobody expects you to explain yourself in it.

During the day, everyone seems to be in a hurry to become something.

Successful.

Happy.

Busy.

Strong.

Okay.

But at night, especially beneath a few quiet lights, those identities become difficult to maintain.

The world slows down.

And when the world becomes quiet enough, you begin hearing things you successfully drowned out all day.

The conversation you should have had.

The person you still miss.

The decision you keep postponing.

The version of yourself you abandoned somewhere between who you wanted to become and who life forced you to be.

Funny how a streetlight can illuminate the road ahead while revealing nothing about where you are going.

Maybe that is what life does too.

It gives us enough light to take the next step, but rarely enough to see the entire journey.

And perhaps we spend too much of our lives waiting for complete clarity.

Waiting until we know exactly what will happen.

Waiting until we are ready.

Waiting until the fear disappears.

But look at the night.

No streetlight illuminates the whole road.

It only gives you a few meters.

Yet somehow, that is enough for the next few meters to reveal themselves.

Then another.

Then another.

Maybe life was never asking us to see everything.

Maybe it was only asking us to keep walking.

I once thought people were afraid of darkness because they couldn't see.

Now I think sometimes we are afraid of light for the opposite reason.

Because when something finally shines on you, there is nowhere left to hide.

The light reveals the cracks.

The tiredness behind the smile.

The uncertainty behind confidence.

The emptiness inside things you once thought would make you happy.

But there is something beautiful about being seen by a light you didn't ask for.

Because sometimes you don't discover that you are broken.

You discover that you are human.

And there is a difference.

So if you ever find yourself standing beneath the lights at night, don't rush home just because the streets are quiet.

Stand there for a moment.

Watch the people passing.

Notice how everyone is carrying something you cannot see.

The man driving alone.

The woman staring at her phone.

The stranger laughing with friends.

The person sitting quietly by the roadside.

Everyone illuminated for a few seconds before disappearing back into the dark.

It makes you wonder how many people you have mistaken for happy simply because their sadness wasn't visible from where you stood.

Maybe we are all like these streets.

Lit in certain places.

Dark in others.

And perhaps that is the most honest definition of being alive:

Not being completely illuminated, but learning to move through the parts of yourself that aren't.

That night, under the lights, I finally understood something.

The darkness wasn't the absence of light.

It was simply the space between one light and the next.

And maybe that is what some seasons of our lives are too.

Not endings.

Not failures.

Just the quiet distance between one version of ourselves and the next.

So keep walking.

Even when the next light looks far away.

You don't need to see the whole road.

You only need enough light to take the next step.

Sometimes, that's all life ever gives us.

And somehow,

it's always been enough.
