THE LAST PROMISE PART ONE - THE MAN AT THE TABLE

PART ONE — THE MAN AT THE TABLE

There are some promises you make because you love someone.

There are others you make because you are afraid of what will happen if you don't.

And then there are promises you should never make at all.

I made mine on a Tuesday.

Her name was Elena.

I met her at a small restaurant hidden somewhere between two streets I had walked past hundreds of times without ever noticing it.

She was sitting alone by the window, reading a book.

Not scrolling through her phone.

Not taking pictures of her food.

Actually reading.

That was the first thing I noticed about her.

The second was that she kept looking at the door.

I don't know why I walked over.

Maybe it was curiosity.

Maybe it was the way she looked like she was waiting for someone who wasn't coming.

Or maybe some meetings are simply decided before we arrive.

“Is this seat taken?”

She looked up.

“No.”

I sat down.

“You always invite yourself to strangers' tables?”

“Only when they look like they're waiting for someone interesting.”

She smiled.

“And what makes you think I'm waiting for someone interesting?”

“You've checked the door seven times in three minutes.”

She closed her book.

“You've been counting?”

“I notice things.”

“That's dangerous.”

“So is sitting alone in a restaurant looking suspicious.”

She laughed.

It was the kind of laugh that made you want to hear it again.

We talked for nearly two hours.

About books.

About cities.

About stupid things we'd done when we were younger.

About love.

We disagreed about almost everything.

And somehow, I liked her more after every disagreement.

When the restaurant was closing, she asked me something strange.

“If you could go back and change one thing in your life, would you?”

I thought about it.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“I wouldn't tell you.”

She smiled.

“Good answer.”

We exchanged numbers.

Before she left, she turned around.

“Daniel?”

“Yeah?”

“Promise me something.”

“What?”

“If we ever fall in love…”

She paused.

“…and I ask you to leave me, don't ask why.”

I laughed.

“That sounds like something someone says before doing something crazy.”

“Promise.”

I looked at her.

For some reason, I didn't laugh this time.

“I promise.”

She nodded.

Then she walked out.

Three weeks later, I was hopelessly in love with her.

Six months later, she moved into my apartment.

And one year after that, on the morning of our wedding…

I woke up to find Elena gone.

No note.

No message.

Nothing.

Except a photograph placed carefully on my pillow.

It was a picture of the two of us.

Taken the night we met.

On the back, there were seven words.

You promised you'd leave when I asked.

I stared at the photograph.

Then my phone rang.

It was Elena.

I answered immediately.

But she didn't speak.

A man's voice came through instead.

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“You don't know me.”

“Where is Elena?”

There was a long silence.

Then he said:

“She's exactly where she told you she'd be.”

“What does that mean?”

The man sighed.

“Daniel…”

“Yes?”

“Your wedding isn't the only thing she cancelled this morning.”

“What else?”

Another silence.

Then:

“Your life.”
