CHAPTER TWO: TWO PINK LINES

It began with tiredness.

Amara had been feeling weak for days. She struggled to concentrate in class, and the smell of food sometimes made her uncomfortable.

At first, she blamed it on stress.

Then her monthly period failed to come.

She counted the days.

She waited.

She prayed.

One Saturday morning, she went to a small pharmacy far from her neighborhood and bought a pregnancy test.

She hid it beneath her wrapper on the journey home.

Her hands trembled as she followed the instructions.

When she finally looked at the result, she couldn't breathe properly.

Two lines.

She stared at them for a long time, hoping they would disappear if she looked hard enough.

They didn't.

No!! she whispered.

She tried again to convince herself that it was a mistake.

But deep inside, she knew.

Amara was pregnant.

She sat on the bathroom floor, covering her mouth with both hands as tears rolled down her cheeks.

Her mind raced through a thousand questions.

What about school?

What about my parents?

What about my dream?

What will people say?

And then she thought about Daniel.

Surely, he would help her.

Surely, the boy who had promised to stand beside her would not abandon her when she needed him most.

She called him that afternoon.

Daniel, I need to tell you something.

What is it?

I'm pregnant.

Silence.

For several seconds, she heard nothing but the sound of traffic in the background.

Then Daniel spoke.

Are you sure?

I did a test.

Maybe the test is wrong.

I don't think so, Daniel. I'm scared.

He sighed.

Amara, this is serious.

I know.

I have my own problems. I'm not even working properly. How do you expect me to take care of a child?

She began crying.

You told me you loved me.

"I do, but this isn't what I planned."

What are we going to do?

He didn't answer.

Instead, he said he would call her back.

He never did.

For three days, Amara called him repeatedly.

His phone eventually became unreachable.

When she went to his house, she learned that he had left to stay with a relative in another town.

He had disappeared.

Just like that, the person who had promised her a future became a memory she could not escape.

Amara was alone.

And her life was about to change in ways she could never have imagined.
