The entrance to the commander’s quarters was a thick demerium-alloy, clear and sheet-plain. Within that deceiving flatness, it housed the most sophisticated sensors and mechanisms for identification and protection.

A slit opened like a wound on the grey demerium, followed by a dim flash. The facial-recognition system identified her as Captain Tina and, with a gaseous hiss, the demerium slowly parted, and she stepped into the commander’s quarters.

Quite a fanatic this commander was for the colour black.

Everything about his alien and anachronistically furnished office was either black or some dark shade near to it. He had a deep adoration for antique wares and ornaments from the days of the first human settlers: the lush black carpets, the elegant furniture, the photorealistic millennia-old paintings showcasing humans in their two-eyed strangeness.

Even his vetro suit was a deep black, delicately shaped to fit his chiselled frame. It stood there on display like a statue bathed in blue light upon a slowly rotating platform. The helm of his armour was pointed at the back like the top of a falling drop of fluid. Behind it, the commander’s twin gorzon blasters levitated before the black adminite walls.

The commander was seated before his floating desk, putting pen to paper.

“Captain,” he called without turning back.

“Commander!” Tina called, stomping a foot into a stiff salute.

The commander rolled back his chair, turned around, and got to his feet. He wore a space-black tank top that clung intimately to his mountain of a chest and black cargo pants riddled with straps and strips. His silver-white hair had been collected and held in place at the back, and his third eye had been sealed tightly behind an eye patch. His two functioning eyes were like twin burning stars that gleamed a stellar gold.

He was a young man, younger even than the maturity of his appearance would suggest.

He paced slowly towards her, hands in his pockets, and stopped when he came before her, leaving barely enough space for a meglo-disc to pass between them.

“At ease, Captain.”

Tina’s muscles relaxed, but her heart rate was rising.

“Co… commander,” she stammered.

The commander lifted an arm, settling it atop her chest. A swaying motion. His fingers embarked on a sensual trip over her breasts, starting from one side and ending at the other, coming to rest just before the pit of her arm before resuming again, travelling over and around a shoulder, up the slope of her neck, all the way to her reddened cheeks.

That was when she swatted his arm away.

“I see someone’s in a bad mood,” joked the commander, his tone casual.

Silence.

They did nothing but observe each other with opposite sorts of expressions. There was evident displeasure in the nature of Tina’s strained gaze, while the commander’s look was casually confident and unbothered despite the obscenity of his provocation.

Tina’s third eye, large and red, focused on the commander. Once she received a reading on his soul, she smiled.

His looks betrayed his feelings.

“I missed you.”

“I missed you too, Tina.”

She succumbed to his arms, planting her face on his chest.

“Why didn’t you come to me when you returned?”

“My captain needed her beauty sleep,” Ludin replied.

Tina blushed.

“How fared the mission?”

“An astounding success. They were there, Tina, as promised. A massive convoy, and just as the intel suggested, the humans were headed for Forte Magnal. We executed our ambush once they were over the Criaman Desert. We sent those two-eyed bastards running. You should have seen them, Tina. Pathetic humans.”

“And the nature of the shipment? What was it that the Empire was transporting?”

Ludin paused and displayed a wicked smile.

“I’ll not say.”

“Come on, Lude. Tell me.”

“Nope. No… can… do.”

He pulled an imaginary zip over his lips.

“Why not?” Tina complained. “Tell me. What is it? Tell me, come on!”

“All right, all right.” Lude gave in to her insistence—or so she thought. “But!”

Lude continued.

“Rather than tell you, I’ll show you… but some other time.”

Tina uncaged herself from his embrace and showed him her back, arms crossed, pouting. He held her by the arm, pulling his face before her neck.

“Are you mad at me, Tina?”

“I am,” she tightened.

“Well, as your commander, I COMMAND you not to be mad at me.”

“I refuse to obey that command.”

“Is that so?”

Luden smiled.

“Disobedience towards your commander…” His arms slithered around her waist. “…is quite the grievous offence, one for which you must be punished.”

“Don’t speak to me.”

Her back was to his face.

“Let me see,” Lude went on. “What punishment would be fitting for such a lapse in conduct?”

He paused for a moment, cushioning his chin between his index finger and thumb. Then he projected his face forward and watched her neck tingle from the touch of his breath.

“I know just the thing.”

His lips touched the back of her neck, and she shivered.

“I’m… I’m still not going to speak to you,” Tina stuttered.

“Yet here you are, doing just that.”

He kissed her neck again, this time longer.

“I’ll tell you about the shipment, I promise you.”

His voice was whispery sweet.

Tina turned at last to face him, wrapping her arms around his neck. Words were no longer required.

He cupped handfuls of her thighs, scooping her off her feet with arms as strong as demerium. Tina locked her legs around him, and they were face-to-face, lips on lips.

Then, interrupting their solace, a loud beep sounded from the door.

“Who is it?” they both asked, irritated.

“It was Ezna, the commander’s secretary,” the computer’s vocals announced, before Ezna’s voice cut through.

“I’ve brought the reports from the Academy as you instructed!”

“I’ll be right there!” Ludin answered. “Just give me five minutes.”

“Ten minutes,” corrected Tina in a sensual whisper.

“Ten minutes!” Ludin repeated.

“O…kay.”

Ezna’s vocal inflection betrayed mild confusion, but alas, she obliged, leaving the two of them to resume where they had left off.

Thirty minutes later, the door opened.

Tina’s head was the first to pop out as she peeked outside with a guilt-clad expression and waved at Ezna.

“Hi.”

Ezna’s smile meant that she needed no explanation as to what engagement had been the reason for their preoccupation.

After her, Ludin, who was also the commander, walked out wearing a conspicuous smile.

“Oh yes.” He cleared his throat. “The report. Where is it?”

“Right here, sir.”

The device was clutched to her chest.

“Let’s have it.”

The commander retrieved it from her hand. He glanced through the contents on screen so quickly that the words would barely have been legible before handing it back to her.

“Good work. You can place it on my desk. I’ll look through it later.”

Ezna was on the verge of frustration, but a look through his soul with her third eye left her with a jolly, understanding smile. She blushed on his behalf, given the fact that his looks always betrayed his feelings.

She handed the device to Tina and gladly granted them the gift of privacy.

As soon as Ezna’s footsteps no longer sang and the whistling of her skirts faded out of hearing distance, Ludin dragged Tina into his chambers, and the demerium slid shut.
