DEMOCRACY FOR SALE: Victoria High School Speech

DEMOCRACY FOR SALE

VICTORIA HIGH SCHOOL SPEECH

What becomes of a nation where votes have a price, Where hunger is weaponised and truth sacrificed? Can a people be free when their future is sold, And their children's tomorrow exchanged for a loaf?

They arrive with sweet tongues when elections draw near, Planting promises like flowers to harvest our fear. They paint us a heaven on banners of gold, Then abandon the garden when their hands hold control.

A bag of rice may silence a stomach today, But can it build a school where our children can stay? Can a handful of naira repair a broken road, Or lift a dying patient from suffering's load?

They divide us by tribe, by religion and name, While sharing the spoils of their political game. We quarrel with neighbours, defending their lies, While the hands that exploit us count wealth and grow wise.

Our classrooms cry out for the books they lack, Our hospitals plead for the medicines they lack. Yet mansions rise tall where public funds disappear, And the people are told that prosperity is near.

But before we condemn those who sit on the throne, Let us search the corruption that we have made our own. Do we curse the dishonest, then praise their display? Do we hate their corruption till it comes our way?

Dear fellow students, tomorrow may hand us the reins, Will we break these old cycles or inherit their chains? Will we serve those beneath us or worship the crown? Will we lift up the people or press them back down?

For democracy is more than a ballot we cast, It is guarding our future from bargains that last. It is questioning power when power goes wrong, And refusing to kneel just because it seems strong.

A vote is no trinket to trade for a meal, It is the people's power, their voice made real. Sell it for crumbs, and you bargain away The right to demand a better tomorrow someday.

No tribe owns the nation, no ruler of the land, No office makes a tyrant too mighty to stand. The crown is a trust, not a personal prize, And the people's true power must never be priced.

So rise, young citizens, let conscience speak clearly, Let no purchased promise make principles disappear. For the future is shaped by the choices we make, And the price of our silence is ours to awake.

Let history remember the stand that we took, Not the slogans we shouted or the promises we shook. May we choose honest hands over glittering lies, And build a nation where justice can rise.

For when votes are for sale, the people's dreams are sold; When conscience has a price, a nation loses its soul. Democracy belongs to us all, not the highest bidder's hold.
