FIRST CLASS OR 10 BILLION NAIRA: WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Imagine someone walks up to you today and gives you two options. You are asked to choose between graduating with a First Class degree from your university or receiving 10 billion naira instantly. You must choose only one, and there is no opportunity to change your decision afterward.

Which would you choose?

This is one of those questions that might look simple at first, but when you think deeply about it, you will realise that it carries a lot of meaning. It challenges our understanding of education, success, wealth, ambition and the kind of future we want for ourselves.

For many students, graduating with a First Class degree is a dream. It represents years of hard work, sleepless nights, sacrifices, dedication and determination. It is not something everyone can achieve. You have to be consistent, disciplined and committed to your studies. Sometimes, you have to sacrifice entertainment, social activities and even personal comfort just to achieve excellent academic results.

A First Class degree can open doors to several opportunities. It can make you stand out when applying for scholarships, postgraduate programmes and certain employment opportunities. It can also give you a sense of fulfilment because you know that your efforts have paid off.

However, let us look at the other option: 10 billion naira!

Honestly, that is not ordinary money. It is the kind of money that can completely change your life and the lives of generations after you if managed properly.

With 10 billion naira, you could establish businesses, invest in real estate, create employment opportunities, support your family, provide scholarships for students and contribute to the development of your community.

You could build a company that employs hundreds or even thousands of people. You could establish hospitals, support educational institutions and become financially independent.

Think about it: how many people spend their entire lives working hard without earning anything close to 10 billion naira?

Now, here comes the interesting part.

Does choosing 10 billion naira mean you do not value education? Absolutely not!

Education is important, but we must understand that academic success and financial success are two different things. Having a First Class degree does not automatically guarantee wealth, just as not having a university degree does not mean someone cannot become successful.

We have seen people with outstanding academic qualifications who are still struggling financially. We have also seen people who never attended university become successful entrepreneurs.

This does not mean education is useless. Rather, it reminds us that education is only one of the many tools that can help us succeed in life.

Personally, I believe that what matters most is the ability to create value, solve problems and make meaningful contributions to society.

Imagine choosing the First Class degree and returning home without a job, while someone who chose the 10 billion naira is building businesses, investing and creating opportunities for others.

On the other hand, imagine choosing the money but lacking the discipline, knowledge and financial intelligence required to manage it. Within a few years, you could lose everything.

Money without wisdom can disappear, just as academic qualifications without practical skills may not take you very far.

That is why I believe both options have their advantages. A First Class degree can be a valuable achievement, while 10 billion naira can provide financial opportunities that many people can only dream of.

But if I were to look at this question from a practical perspective, I would ask myself: What exactly am I trying to achieve in life?

Is it to make my parents proud? Is it to become financially independent? Is it to build something meaningful? Is it to create opportunities for other people?

At the end of the day, success should not be measured by certificates or the amount of money in your bank account alone. It should also be measured by the impact you make, the lives you touch and the legacy you leave behind.

Nevertheless, we cannot pretend that 10 billion naira is an easy option to ignore!

So, I want to hear your honest opinion.

If you were given just two options, which would you choose?

Graduate with a First Class degree.

Receive 10 billion naira instantly.

Remember, you cannot choose both. You must sacrifice one to have the other.

Let's hear your reasons. Would you rather have the certificate or the money?
