How the flesh urged me to take revenge on my friend.

Hiii beautiful one,

How many have heard the words, Just leave it to God?

You know, you’re in your mind, cooking how you would repay someone for what they did to you, and someone is there, saying,” Revenge is of the lord.’

A friend of mine recently did something to me. To anyone else, it probably wouldn’t have seemed like much. But I’m built differently, and things tend to get to me easily; the pain of being a sensitive empath.

It hurt me so deeply that I decided I'd get my payback. “I must actually do my own back,” I remember telling my friend.

Over time, I’ve become self-aware enough to recognize my patterns: whenever I bottle things up instead of addressing them, they eventually burst out unprovoked, and I end up reacting like a complete lunatic. Relax, I’m definitely working on it.

So back to this friend: I had everything planned. I set the exact date for my revenge and rehearsed the exact words I’d say when he confronted me. I was ready.

Then came the nudge.

You know the one. To make matters worse, I was fasting, so that inner whisper was louder. Honestly, I didn’t care if this friend got upset by what I was going to do; I just wanted to give him a taste of his own medicine.

It was a classic battle of the flesh against the spirit. We’ve all been there: you clearly want to take action, but that quiet voice urges you to pause.

If I told you how hard it was to walk away from that act of revenge, you wouldn’t believe me. My spirit cheered me on, but my flesh urged me to still do it. You’ve seen those movies where someone stands on the right and the left, telling you to do it. That was me a few weeks ago.

As Christians, we are called to walk by the Spirit continually because our flesh will fail us every time, whether it’s holding a grudge or facing daily temptations. Let’s be real; we’re all adults here, right? Imagine sitting in a room with someone you’re attracted to.

A beautiful love song is playing, and to make it even more intense, the room is cold. It’s not rocket science what your flesh wants in that moment. Your partner is like a cold glass of water, and you’re looking at them like someone who’s been stranded in the desert for years.

(A bit of a dramatic analogy, I know!)

As a human, you know what you want, but as a Christian, you know what to do and where to draw the line. But hey, what do I know? I’m a small girl, oh. I know NOTHING. Abeg oh.

Our flesh is constantly waiting for us to slip up. But don’t hand over the trophy just yet. This week, ask God for the grace to subdue the flesh and walk in dominion. You control your flesh; it shouldn’t control you.

If you’re itching to get back at someone for what they did, surrender that battle to God instead; holding on to that hurt won’t accomplish anything.

To remind you how bad revenge is, I’m sharing a story I wrote about sisterhood and revenge, and I’ll be posting chapters here every week.

Read Chapter One here: substack.com/@toyinod/note/p-22203564...

Fingers crossed it becomes one of your favourite books ever.

Take care of yourself, and have a beautiful weekend.

Love,

Twi-Twi, the Flesh-Controller

(Hey, sounds like a superhero name, right?)
