KISS ME TOMORROW

One of the best things a friend can do for you might be to ruin your plans.

Wait, I did not say your life. Your PLAN.. the plans you made when you didn't know what was best for you yet.

Title sounds familiar? Yes. One, out of the many things I can’t stop to think about since I saw that movie, is FRIENDSHIP.

Tochi, Dennis, and Kiki. Ouuu🥺

Look at it, their friendship seemed to understand something we mostly forget; “Friendship should not only make life enjoyable. It should make life better.”

It started as a DARE. “If you can stay single for one year, you’ll own 10% of my company (worth ₦5billion) at the time, and if you break it, I’ll take 50% of your business”. That was it. It wasn’t an easy journey for Tochi of course.

He probably had no idea what that dare would become for her, because Tochi could have spent that year chasing men, chasing attention, or filling the space with another relationship. Instead, something shifted.

She had to face herself, and in that year, she built.

She built her business.

She opened an exceptional walk-in store.

She invested in herself.

And according to her, it became the year she made the highest investment of her life.

If you look closely, you’ll realize the dare was never really about staying single. It was about what she could become when she stopped making romance the centre of her life.

And her friends? (Oh my heart!)

They weren’t just cheering, “go girl, you can do it”. They PARTICIPATED in her growth.. every step of the way. They believed in what she was building.

They did not just ask, “So, how is the business going?” They became part of the reason it could go.

That is the kind of friendship I want.

Friendships that talk investment. No everytime “have you eaten?” I’ve not eaten! Okay?

Not only, “Have you seen this person?”, but, “Have you applied for that opportunity?”

Not only, “I'm proud of you”, but “how can I help you get there?”🥺

There is a difference between having friends who celebrate your results and having friends who are interested in your becoming, and I think we need more of the latter. You agree with me yeah?

Friends who send opportunities because they thought of you, who remind you of the dream you mentioned six months ago. Friends who can tell when you're settling, who will challenge you when your excuses start sounding convincing. Friends who don't compete with your growth, but contribute to it.

And again, there was something else about Tochi, Dennis and Kiki that held my attention pinned down!

Their closeness still did not erase respect.

Tochi addressing Dennis as “Sir”?

Maybe it’s just me that pay so much attention to details, but that little detail said a lot to me.

How comfortable have we become to think familiarity gives us permission to become careless? We confuse closeness with entitlement. We think because someone is our friend, we can disrespect them, dismiss their position, or speak to them anyhow.

Genuine intimacy doesn't have to destroy honour.

You can know someone in and out and still respect them. Now, you can disagree with someone and still recognize their worth.

Another lesson I can’t ignore is this; healthy friendship is not two people becoming one person. It is two whole people becoming better people because they have each other. Three friends with their personalities. None had to lose himself for the other.

And at the end? Tochi’s discipline did not just produce personal growth.

It gave rise to OWNERSHIP. She owned herself first. She owned her business, built an exceptional walk-in store.

And the sweetest part? She ended up owning 10% of Dennis' company. A unicorn status company!!

All from a DARE from her friend that believe she has enough capacity, but has just been channeling it to the wrong thing.

That’s the kind I desire. And behind desiring it, that’s the kind I want to be. Where I can hold meaningful conversations with my friends. I dare them to be better, and they dare me. The kind where your growth does not threaten me, and my success does not diminish you.

The kind where your weakness doesn't become my gossip, and my strength becomes your encouragement. The kind where we can laugh together, dream together, pray together, build together, and still remain ourselves.

Give me friendships that talk investment.

The kind where we don't just say, “I love you”, but we prove it by becoming the kind of people who can help each other grow.

If you’ve watched the movie, what stood out for you?

(If you’ve not watched this movie - KISS ME TOMORROW - this is your cue to go and watch it, as there’s a lot to learn from it.)
