Let's talk about the Yahoo CultureSomething that is gradually becoming a norm. And everyone seems to be finding their own way to get a piece of the forbidden cake. Young people are getting into it before they've even had the chance to properly figure out what they want to do with their lives. And the part that annoys me the most?People are beginning to normalize it. I hate that thing called Yahoo with perfect hatred.I don't think there will ever be a time in my life when I'll get used to it. And unfortunately, the consequences don't stop with the people doing it. It has followed Nigeria's image so closely that getting some foreigners to trust us is becoming harder. I've experienced this times without number since I started working online. The moment some clients notice you're from Nigeria, there's sometimes this sudden change. They either ghost or tell you straight up that they can't work with you. I can't even count the number of times I've screamed, pulled my hair and wondered what exactly I was supposed to do about something I didn't even do.😭 You end up having to work twice as hard to prove that you're legitimate. And the annoying part is that one tiny mistake can be enough for someone to suddenly look at you differently. Something similar happened to me recently, which is probably why I'm especially pissed while writing this. But then... Who do we blame? The guys doing it?Absolutely. But I also blame the people helping to make it socially acceptable. You see people online talking about how a man should be able to provide this and that, how he should have ridiculous amounts of money to spend on a woman... And I'm thinking: Have you ever met a legitimate working man who knows how hard he worked for his money? Of course, there are men who can afford those things. But why are we creating this expectation that a man has to throw around suspicious amounts of money just to prove that he can provide? Then you see someone reject a legitimately hardworking guy because he's “broke” or “not my type,” only to entertain someone making questionable money because he can fund the lifestyle she wants. And then everyone acts surprised when Yahoo keeps thriving. The audacity of some people these days is even irritating. You're doing Yahoo and you're bold enough to say it like it's an actual profession. Then you give me: “It's not easy to get clients.”“The economy is bad.”“Everybody is hustling.”“You don't understand my circumstances.” Like... THE AUDACITY.😭 And no, I can't understand any circumstance that makes scamming innocent people acceptable. Life is hard.Very hard. But hardship doesn't automatically give you permission to make another person suffer for your survival. Everybody has a story.Everybody has their struggles Sometimes you think your situation is the worst until you hear what someone else is surviving through. Come to Lagos. You'll see young people grinding every single day, learning skills, taking odd jobs, building businesses, freelancing, creating things and trying to find their way out of poverty. So no, I don't buy the excuses.There are better things to get involved in. I remember listening to some guys having a conversation in school once. The way they were talking about their “clients” and everything they were doing was so casual. No shame whatsoever Like they were discussing a normal nine-to-five job. I just shook my head. I was too irritated to even say anything. Someone once told me that nobody actually wants to do Yahoo, but the circumstances of life and the situation in the country push people into it. I told him that's a bloody excuse for laziness and unwillingness to find another way. Maybe that sounds harsh. But that's genuinely how I feel. Because if we keep calling everything an excuse of circumstance, eventually nothing is anybody's responsibility anymore. Kai. How did we even get here? When did scamming someone become something you could proudly tell your friends about? When did legitimate work become the embarrassing option because it doesn't bring money quickly enough? And the funny thing;The money a good tech job, business or legitimate career can eventually bring you is not something you should underestimate. You might have to start small.You might struggle. You might spend months learning before you make anything substantial. But the moment you figure it out, you're building something that belongs to you and is long term. You're not constantly looking over your shoulder wondering when everything will collapse. You're not ruining someone else's life to fund yours. You're not making it harder for the next Nigerian trying to get a legitimate opportunity. That's what really gets me. Yahoo doesn't only hurt the person being scammed. It hurts the people trying to do things legitimately too. It damages trust.It damages our reputation. And it makes the honest Nigerian work harder to prove that they're honest.
