MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A DIGITAL SKILL BEFORE YOU GRADUATE!

Dear undergraduate, I want you to take a moment and think about your future beyond the four walls of your university.

One mistake many students make is believing that graduating with a good certificate is all they need to become successful. Don't get me wrong, education is important, and having a degree is something worth celebrating. However, the reality is that the world is changing, and having a certificate alone may not be enough to give you the financial freedom you desire.

Let me ask you a question: What happens when you graduate, complete your clearance, collect your certificate and discover that getting a job is not as easy as you imagined?

What happens when you spend months submitting applications without receiving a positive response?

This is why I strongly believe that every undergraduate should have at least one digital skill before graduating.

You don't have to study computer science or information technology before you can acquire a digital skill. Regardless of your department, there is something valuable you can learn.

For instance, you can learn graphic design, video editing, content writing, virtual assistance, digital marketing, data analysis, web development or social media management.

These are skills that can open doors to different opportunities, including remote jobs, freelancing and business opportunities.

Imagine being a final-year student who already knows how to edit videos, design graphics or manage social media accounts for businesses. While waiting for graduation or searching for a traditional job, you could already be using that skill to provide services and earn money.

Wouldn't that be a good position to find yourself in?

The beautiful thing about digital skills is that you don't necessarily need to spend a fortune to get started. There are free tutorials on YouTube and other learning platforms that can help you begin your journey. What matters most is your willingness to learn, practise and remain consistent.

You can dedicate just one or two hours daily to developing a skill. You don't have to abandon your academics or sacrifice your studies. Learn to balance both.

Another important thing is that you shouldn't rush into learning every skill you come across. Find something you are genuinely interested in, focus on it, practise regularly and become good at it.

Don't just acquire a certificate from an online course and assume you are already an expert. Build something with what you have learned. Create designs, edit videos, write articles, manage sample projects and develop a portfolio that demonstrates your abilities.

Remember, people are not only interested in what you claim to know; they want to see what you can actually do.

Dear undergraduate, don't wait until you graduate before you start thinking about how to become financially independent.

Your parents may be paying your school fees today, but tomorrow, you may have responsibilities of your own. You may want to support your family, pay your bills, start a business or achieve personal goals.

Having a digital skill can give you an additional opportunity to work towards those dreams.

Of course, learning a digital skill doesn't guarantee instant employment or wealth. It requires patience, discipline, consistency and the ability to market yourself. But it gives you another advantage in an increasingly competitive world.

Your certificate is important, but don't let it be the only valuable thing you take away from school.

Graduate with a degree, but also graduate with a skill, practical experience and the ability to create opportunities for yourself.

I want to leave every undergraduate reading this with one question:

If you were asked to leave school today, apart from your certificate, what practical skill do you have that can put money in your pocket?

Think about it!

Don't wait until graduation before preparing for life after school.

LEARN A DIGITAL SKILL TODAY. YOUR FUTURE SELF WILL THANK YOU! 🔥
