MASS COMMUNICATION WAS A CHOICE I MADE... NOT MY PLAN B!

I am a Mass Communication student.

And somehow, some people hear that and immediately assume you ended up here because you could not make it into Law.

Biko, who told you that?! 😂

I applied for Mass Communication in JAMB.

I chose it.

I wanted it.

I got it.

Nobody transferred me here because I failed to make it to Law.

And honestly, I am tired of seeing Mass Communication treated like the course people settle for when they cannot get into the “high” courses.

Some people hear Mass Communication and the first thing they think is, “So you just talk?”

Or, “You will become a journalist?”

Or that look that says, “At least you tried.” 😭

Meanwhile, we are learning journalism, broadcasting, public relations, advertising, research, writing, media production, communication theories and so much more.

We read.

We research.

We write.

We interview.

We report.

We communicate.

And yes, we use our voices, but there is a whole lot more behind that voice.

Everyone wants their story told.

Every organisation needs to communicate.

Every profession needs the media.

Every society needs information.

So why should the people trained to handle all of these things be looked down on?

I am not saying Mass Communication is better than Law, Medicine, Engineering, Nursing, Pharmacy or any other course.

I respect every profession.

But I will not disrespect mine just because somebody thinks theirs sounds more important.

I did not “end up” in Mass Communication.

I chose Mass Communication.

And I am proud of that choice.

Proudly a Mass Communication student.

Unapologetically.

Loudly.

Without shame.

Because if everybody wants to be important, somebody still has to tell the story. And I am proud to be learning how to do just that.
