MUST A CHILD LIVE THEIR PARENTS' DREAMS? 🥺💔

Let's talk about something we don't discuss enough!

Have you ever wondered how many young people are studying courses they never wanted, simply because their parents chose those courses for them?

A child wants to study Theatre Arts, but the parents insist on Medicine.

Another wants to become a fashion designer or an Entrepreneur but the parents believe Engineering is the only respectable career...

And sometimes, it goes beyond persuasion..

"If you don't study the course I want, forget that you have a father or mother!"

Wait o! 😭💔 Is this really how we want to raise the next generation?

Don't get me wrong, Parents have experience yes They understand certain realities of life that young people may not fully known, They have every reason to guide their children, question their decisions, and encourage them to think about their future..

*But there is a difference between guiding a child and forcing a child to live your dream..*

I've heard of students who struggle under the weight of parental expectations, students who are afraid to speak up because they don't want to disappoint their families, and students who keep pushing through courses they never wanted simply because they feel they have no other choice..

Some even graduate with impressive results but still feel unfulfilled and confused..

Now, let's look at this from a legal perspective ⚖️

The Nigerian Constitution protects certain fundamental rights, including human dignity under Section 34 and freedom of thought and conscience under Section 38, Although these provisions do not expressly grant every child an unrestricted right to choose any university course, they remind us that young people are human beings whose dignity and developing independence deserve consideration too

Parenting should involve guidance, not the complete erasure of a child's voice!

Dear parents, your child may not choose the career you imagined for them.. Their dream might be different, Their strengths may lie in areas you never considered!

Please listen to them, Help them understand the realities of their choices and encourage them to develop their abilities and make informed decisions

Dear young people, your dreams also come with responsibilities... Understand your interests, seek wise counsel, and be prepared to explain your decisions..

This conversation is about finding a balance between parental guidance and a child's right to develop their own identity and aspirations because at the end of the day, the child is the one who will live that life, pursue that career, and wake up every morning to do that work!

So, let me ask you:

🤔 Should parents have the final say in the course their children study simply because they are paying the school fees?

Or should the child's interests, abilities, and aspirations carry significant weight in that decision?

Let's discuss, I want to hear your views too...🙏
