RAVENSCOURT: THE MAN IN THE PORTRAIT

Lucien Vale had seen that ring before.

A thick black band with a dark stone set into its centre.

He had seen it in the photograph hidden behind Evelyn Ashford's portrait.

And he had seen it downstairs.

On the hand of someone who had been standing in the drawing room.

Someone who had lied to him.

He returned to the staircase, the photograph tucked inside his coat.

Everyone was still in the drawing room.

Victoria stood beside the fireplace, her arms wrapped around herself. Julian sat rigidly on the sofa, while Mrs. Bell remained near the door.

Lucien looked at their hands.

Victoria's fingers were bare.

Julian wore a gold signet ring.

Mrs. Bell's hands were clasped tightly in front of her.

Then he noticed it.

A black ring on a hand resting behind the drawing room door.

The owner stepped forward.

Richard Blackwood.

"Detective Vale," the man said pleasantly. "I believe we've met."

"No," Lucien replied. "We haven't."

Richard smiled.

"Not formally, perhaps."

Lucien studied him.

He was in his late fifties, impeccably dressed, with silver hair and the sort of confidence that came from spending a lifetime believing consequences were for other people.

"Where did you get that ring?"

Richard glanced at his hand.

"This old thing?"

"Take it off."

The smile disappeared.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me."

For several seconds, neither man moved.

Then Richard slowly removed the ring.

Lucien took out the photograph.

He held it beside Richard's hand.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

Same ring.

Same distinctive stone.

Same man standing beside Sebastian and Evelyn twenty years earlier.

Victoria made a small, wounded sound.

"Richard."

He turned to her.

"Victoria."

The way they said each other's names told Lucien more than either intended.

"You know him," Lucien said.

Victoria looked away.

"Everyone knew Richard Blackwood."

"That isn't what I asked."

Richard slipped the ring into his pocket.

"I was a friend of Sebastian's. Evelyn's, too, for a time."

"For a time?"

"Friendships end."

"And marriages?"

Richard's expression hardened.

"Careful, Detective."

Lucien stepped closer.

"Three days before Evelyn died, you were standing beside her in a photograph Sebastian apparently spent twenty years trying to bury. Now you've appeared at Ravenscourt on the night of his death. You'll forgive me if I find that interesting."

Richard's eyes flickered toward the photograph.

"Where did you find that?"

"Behind Evelyn's portrait."

For the first time, Richard looked genuinely unsettled.

Then he laughed.

"Sebastian always did have a flair for the dramatic."

"You knew about the compartment?"

Richard didn't answer.

Lucien turned to Victoria.

"Mrs. Ashford, I need the truth. What happened to Evelyn?"

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"I've already told you what happened."

"No. You've told me what you wanted people to believe."

Richard walked toward the fireplace.

"Perhaps I can help."

"Nobody asked you," Julian snapped.

Richard regarded him with mild amusement.

"Still your father's temper, I see."

Julian rose.

"Don't speak about my father."

"Which one?"

The room fell silent.

Julian stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria stood abruptly.

"Richard, stop."

But he was already looking at Lucien.

"How much do you know about Evelyn Ashford's death, Detective?"

"She died in an accident twenty years ago."

"According to whom?"

"The official investigation."

Richard laughed bitterly.

"Then the official investigation was a lie."

Lucien felt the room tighten around him.

"Explain."

Richard looked directly at Victoria.

"Tell him what you did."

Victoria shook her head.

"Please."

"Tell him."

"I said please!"

Her voice broke.

Julian stared at his mother.

Lucien waited.

Finally, Victoria whispered, "Evelyn discovered that Sebastian was hiding money. A great deal of it. She intended to expose him."

"And you killed her?" Lucien asked.

Victoria flinched.

"I confronted her. We argued. She fell."

"Fell where?"

"Down the east staircase."

"Was she alive when you left her?"

Victoria began to cry.

"I don't know."

Richard looked away.

For the first time, his expression held something that resembled grief.

Lucien took a slow breath.

"And what did you do afterward?"

"Sebastian handled everything."

"Meaning?"

"He told me to go to my room. The next morning, he said Evelyn's death had been ruled an accident. He said nobody would ever know what happened."

"And you believed him?"

"I was young. I was frightened."

"You were frightened for twenty years," Lucien said. "And you let an innocent person die without justice."

Victoria lowered her head.

Richard's voice cut through the silence.

"She wasn't the only one who kept quiet."

Lucien turned to him.

"What does that mean?"

Richard reached into his jacket and produced a folded sheet of paper.

"I came here because Sebastian sent me a letter three days before he died."

He handed it to Lucien.

The paper was old, creased, and unmistakably written in Sebastian's hand.

Richard,

The past is no longer buried. Someone has found the evidence.

If anything happens to me, tell Lucien Vale what really happened to Evelyn.

He must find the original ledger before Victoria does.

Burn this letter.

Sebastian.

Lucien read it twice.

Then he looked up.

"Why didn't you come forward earlier?"

Richard's face darkened.

"Because I received the letter after Sebastian was already dead."

"And you expect me to believe that?"

"No. I expect you to investigate it."

Lucien folded the letter.

"The original ledger. What ledger?"

Richard hesitated.

Then he looked toward the staircase.

"The east wing."

Mrs. Bell dropped the teacup she was holding.

It shattered across the floor.

Everyone turned toward her.

For one brief moment, the housekeeper looked less like a servant and more like a woman who had just heard her own death sentence.

Lucien walked toward her.

"Mrs. Bell?"

She stared at the broken porcelain.

"Forgive me, Detective."

"What's in the east wing?"

"Nothing."

"Then why are you frightened?"

Her lips trembled.

"Because some doors should never be opened."

Lucien glanced at Richard.

Richard gave the faintest nod.

The east wing.

The same part of Ravenscourt that had been closed since Evelyn's death.

The same part Sebastian had forbidden Lucien to enter during his initial investigation.

Lucien turned toward the corridor.

"Nobody leaves this house."

He looked directly at Mrs. Bell.

"Especially you."

The east wing smelled of dust and damp wood.

Lucien moved slowly, his torch cutting through the darkness.

Behind him, he heard footsteps.

He turned.

Julian stood at the entrance.

"I told everyone to stay downstairs," Lucien said.

"And I decided I wasn't everyone."

"This isn't a game."

"I know."

Julian's expression was hard, but his eyes betrayed him.

"My father is dead. My mother is lying. A stranger has appeared with a photograph from twenty years ago. And apparently, there's a secret room in my own house."

He stepped closer.

"If you find something, I want to see it."

Lucien studied him.

Then he turned and continued down the corridor.

At the far end stood a narrow wooden door.

Its handle was tarnished.

A brass plate had been fixed above it.

PRIVATE ARCHIVE.

Lucien tried the handle.

Locked.

He took the small silver key he had found in Sebastian's desk and slid it into the lock.

It turned.

Inside, the room was lined with shelves. Old account books, correspondence, and leather-bound ledgers sat beneath a thick layer of dust.

Someone had searched the room recently.

Several books lay scattered across the floor.

Lucien moved to the desk.

A single drawer remained locked.

He forced it open.

Inside was a ledger wrapped in brown paper.

He removed it carefully.

The first pages contained names, dates, and payments.

Large payments.

Payments made by Sebastian Ashford to officials, lawyers, and individuals whose names appeared nowhere in the family's public records.

Then Lucien reached the final pages.

His expression changed.

There was a handwritten entry dated three days before Evelyn's death.

E. ASHFORD — ORIGINAL TESTAMENT REMOVED.

Beneath it was another entry.

R. BLACKWOOD — PAYMENT REFUSED.

And below that, written in darker ink:

MRS. BELL — WITNESS COMPENSATED.

Julian stared over Lucien's shoulder.

"She was paid?"

"Apparently."

"For what?"

Lucien turned another page.

There was a final entry.

No amount.

No signature.

Only a sentence.

THE DETECTIVE MUST NEVER FIND THE SECOND COPY.

Julian swallowed.

"Second copy of what?"

Lucien closed the ledger.

"The original testament, perhaps. Or something even more dangerous."

He slipped it into his coat.

Then he noticed a small photograph tucked between the last two pages.

He pulled it out.

It showed Evelyn standing outside the old chapel, holding a sealed envelope.

On the back were five words.

IF I DIE, TRUST NOBODY.

Lucien stared at the photograph.

Then he heard a sound behind him.

A soft click.

He turned.

The archive door was closing.

"Julian?"

No answer.

Lucien rushed toward the doorway, but the lock turned from the other side.

He grabbed the handle.

It wouldn't move.

Someone had locked him inside.

He struck the door with his shoulder.

"Julian!"

Silence.

Then footsteps receded down the corridor.

Lucien stepped back, his jaw tightening.

He examined the room.

One narrow window.

Too small to climb through.

Shelves packed with old records.

And a fireplace at the far end.

He crossed to it.

The chimney was blocked, but a metal panel beside the hearth sat slightly ajar.

Behind it was a narrow service passage.

Lucien pulled it open.

Cold air drifted from the darkness.

He had just found another secret.

And someone had been desperate to keep him from finding it.

He took one last look at the ledger in his hand.

Then he entered the passage.

Twenty minutes later, Lucien emerged into the servants' corridor.

He found Victoria waiting outside the kitchen.

Her face was pale.

"Detective."

"Where is Mrs. Bell?"

Victoria shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Where is Julian?"

"I thought he was with you."

Lucien's expression hardened.

"Someone locked me inside the archive."

Victoria covered her mouth.

"Who?"

"That's what I'm trying to find out."

He held up the ledger.

"But I have a better question."

She stared at it.

"Do you know what this is?"

Victoria's eyes filled with tears again.

"The ledger."

"You've seen it before?"

She nodded slowly.

"Sebastian kept it locked away. He said it was the only thing protecting us."

"Protecting you from whom?"

Victoria looked toward the dark corridor.

"From Richard."

Lucien waited.

She took a shaky breath.

"Twenty years ago, Richard discovered what Sebastian had done. The money. The forged documents. Everything. He threatened to expose him."

"And Evelyn?"

"She found the original documents and decided to help Richard. She wanted to take the evidence to the authorities."

"What happened?"

Victoria closed her eyes.

"I confronted her. We fought. She fell."

"And Sebastian covered it up."

"Yes."

Lucien watched her carefully.

"Then why did Richard wait twenty years?"

Victoria's face crumpled.

"Because he wasn't trying to protect Evelyn."

She looked up at Lucien.

"He was protecting himself."

Before Lucien could ask another question, a scream tore through the house.

Julian's scream.

It came from upstairs.

Lucien ran.

He took the staircase two steps at a time and reached Sebastian's study.

The door stood open.

Julian was inside, backed against the desk.

Mrs. Bell stood beside the window, her face white with terror.

On the floor between them lay a second envelope.

Black.

Unmarked.

Lucien approached cautiously.

"Nobody move."

He picked up the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Four words, written in the same handwriting as the message left earlier that evening.

RICHARD KILLED EVELYN.

Lucien looked at Mrs. Bell.

"Is this true?"

She stared at the paper.

Then at the ledger beneath his arm.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Finally, she whispered, "I saw him leave her room that night."

Victoria appeared in the doorway.

Richard was nowhere to be seen.

Lucien turned to Julian.

"Where is Blackwood?"

Julian shook his head.

"He left."

"When?"

"Just now. Before the lights went out."

Lucien looked at the open window.

Beyond it, the grounds stretched into darkness.

Richard Blackwood had disappeared.

Again.

And this time, he had left behind an accusation that could change everything.

Lucien looked down at the ledger.

At the photograph.

At the words accusing Richard of murder.

Three pieces of evidence.

Three different stories.

One dead woman.

And a house full of people who had spent twenty years learning how to lie.

Then Lucien noticed something on the back of the photograph.

A small inscription he had overlooked.

RAVENSCOURT WAS NEVER HIS.

He stared at the words.

Sebastian had inherited Ravenscourt.

Everyone knew that.

So who did it belong to?

And what had Evelyn discovered that was worth killing for?

Lucien slipped the photograph into his pocket.

Outside, somewhere beyond the old chapel, a car engine roared to life.

He rushed to the window.

Headlights cut through the trees.

Then vanished.

Richard Blackwood was gone.

But Lucien now knew one thing with absolute certainty.

The man in the photograph had not returned to Ravenscourt to mourn Sebastian Ashford.

He had returned to make sure the truth stayed buried.

And he was willing to kill again to protect it.

TO BE CONTINUED... 🖤
