On getting to the company, I had already planned what I would wear, and trust me, I looked incredible. My hair was well made, my gown was beautiful, and I was holding a black handbag.

I sat at the reception until the manager told me I was now ready to see the boss. I walked down to his office and knocked. I didn't hear anything at first, so I knocked again. This time, I heard, "Come in."

I went in, shut the door, and stood beside it until I was offered a seat. The fragrance in the office was delightful, and then I looked up and saw a good-looking, cute man sitting opposite me. The boss was so fine!

He brought out my CV after looking through some files. "Miss Esther, right?"

"Yes, sir."

"It's nice to have you."

"It's nice to be here too."

He asked if I was conversant with using a laptop, since the vacancy was for a secretary whose work would include using a system, arranging files, and doing printouts. "Sure, why not?" I said.

He told me the name of his company and what they do, then explained the role of a secretary and my responsibilities. I thought, Fine, this is fair. These are things I can do. He also told me the resumption and closing times, and they were very favorable.

Then we got to the most important part: the salary.

"The job is going for 40k," he said. That's ₦40,000.

"Unfortunately, I won't be able to settle for that," I replied. "Let's do 50."

And the banter began. "40 or 50?" "40 or 50?" Eventually, he explained how his company operates. He wasn't saying 40,000 would be my fixed salary. If he saw my seriousness and commitment to the work, I would of course get an increase.

"Sure, beautiful," I said, but I still stood my ground. I was not settling for 40k.

At that point, he said they would get back to me after deliberation.

"Sure, no problem."

"Thank you for coming."

"Thank you for having me." Then I complimented him: "Your outfit looks really nice on you."

"Thank you."

I pulled the chair back, stood up, and set it neatly in front again. "Thank you so much, sir."

"You're most welcome."

I opened the door and left. Walking down to the reception, I saw a couple of new faces, and of course they were fine too. Is everybody in this office fine? I thought, and laughed to myself.

Just before I reached the reception, I met the manager. "How was the meeting with the boss?"

"It was nice. It went well."

"That's beautiful. And the money? Was he agreeable?"

I explained that he said 40 and I said 50, but I believed we would reach an agreement. He told me they would get back to me.

"All right, that's beautiful. Thanks for coming."

"Thanks for having me." I opened the door and went down the stairs.

On my way home, I told the person who had connected me to the job how it went, and that they would get back to me.

The first month passed. The second month passed. Towards the end of the second month, I was already giving up. I was frustrated, so I decided to use the time to clear my head. The other job offers I was getting were so far from home that, after calculating transport and everything else, they just wouldn't work for me.

Then one morning, I had just taken my bath and was looking for something to eat when my phone rang. It was an unknown number. I picked up, and the person mentioned the name of the company. I was expected to resume the following Monday. I had been offered the job!

I was incredibly happy. I couldn't wait for Monday to come. I went through the entire week counting down, and on Sunday night I picked out my dress and ironed it. I was supposed to resume by 8 a.m., but by 6 I was ready, and by 7 I was already on my way to the office.

On getting there, I opened the door and met the manager. "Welcome to our office."

"Thank you."

He showed me to my seat, which was my own office as the secretary, complete with my desk and everything. I sat down, looked up, and the next thing I saw was a CCTV camera. Then another. And another. As I looked around, I realized there wasn't just one. There were numerous cameras.

Imagine what was going through my mind.

I'll gist you about what came next in Series 04. Thank you for waiting this long. 💛

🎧 Prefer to listen?
