The Girl Everyone Hated

It was 7:15 a.m. on a Monday morning when 17-year-old *Mercy* stepped out of her small house, dressed in her school uniform.

She looked at herself in the cracked mirror before leaving.

"One day, my life will change," she whispered to herself.

Mercy lived with her mother, who sold vegetables in the market, and her younger brother, David. Her father had died when she was ten, leaving her mother to struggle to provide for the family.

Despite their poverty, Mercy was a brilliant student. She always came among the top three in her class.

But there was one problem.

Almost everyone at school hated her.

"Look who's here!" Vanessa shouted as Mercy entered the classroom.

Vanessa was the richest and most popular girl in SS2. Her father owned several businesses, and she believed nobody was better than her.

"Mercy, did you wash that uniform with your hands or did you pick it up from the dustbin?" Vanessa asked, laughing.

The entire classroom burst into laughter.

Mercy lowered her head and walked quietly to her seat.

"Please, just leave me alone," she whispered.

"Leave you alone?" Vanessa laughed. "Who do you think you are? You're just a poor girl pretending to be important because you get good grades."

Her friends laughed even louder.

Mercy fought back her tears. She had become used to their insults, but that didn't mean they stopped hurting her.

Suddenly, the classroom went quiet.

A tall, handsome boy walked through the door.

His name was Daniel Williams, the son of one of the wealthiest men in the city. He was intelligent, proud, and known for never getting involved in other people's problems.

"What's happening here?" Daniel asked.

"Nothing," Vanessa replied quickly, adjusting her hair. "We were just having fun."

Daniel glanced at Mercy, who was staring at her desk.

"Is that what you call fun?" he asked coldly.

Nobody answered.

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

Before she could respond, their teacher entered the classroom and announced a surprise test.

Two hours later, the results were released.

Mercy scored 98%. Daniel scored 95%. Vanessa scored 42%.

The classroom erupted in murmurs.

Vanessa stared at the result sheet in disbelief.

"How can that poor girl score higher than Daniel?" she shouted.

Mercy said nothing. She simply collected her books.

But Vanessa wasn't ready to let it go.

During break time, she approached Mercy near the school staircase.

"Listen carefully," Vanessa whispered. "You embarrassed me today, and I will make you regret it."

"Vanessa, I didn't do anything to you," Mercy replied.

"Your existence annoys me!"

Vanessa turned and walked away with her friends.

Mercy stood there, wondering why people hated her so much when she had never done anything wrong to them.

Just then, Daniel approached her.

"Hey," he said.

Mercy looked up in surprise.

"Yes?"

"I saw what Vanessa did to you. Don't let them make you feel worthless."

Mercy stared at him. Nobody had ever spoken to her that way at school.

"Thank you," she whispered.

Daniel was about to leave when his phone rang.

He answered it.

"Hello, Mum?"

He listened for a few seconds, and his expression suddenly changed.

"What do you mean she's alive?"

Mercy froze.

Daniel turned around and noticed her standing behind him.

"Who are you?" he demanded.

"I'm Mercy."

Daniel stared at her face as if he had just seen a ghost.

"No," he whispered. "This can't be possible."

He quickly walked away without another word.

Mercy stood there, confused.

Why had Daniel reacted that way?

And why did he look at her as though he already knew her?

TO BE CONTINUED...

đź’” END OF EPISODE 1
