Then she said: “You can't.” I frowned. “Why?” “Because the money isn't mine.” I sat up properly. “What?” “I was supposed to send it to someone else.” “Then just tell your bank.” “I can't.” “Why?” Another silence. Then she whispered: “Because if I tell them where the money came from…” She stopped. “Where did it come from?” She didn't answer. Instead, she said: “Listen carefully.” Her voice was shaking now. “Someone is going to call you.” “Who?” “I don't know.” “What do they want?” “The money.” I laughed nervously. “Well, they can have it.” “No.” She sounded serious. “They can't.” “Why?” “Because the moment you return it…” She paused. “…they'll know you have it.” I went quiet. “What exactly did you send me?” She said nothing. Then the call ended. Five seconds later, another message appeared. Not from Amara. From an unknown number. HELLO. Another message. WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THE ₦10 MILLION. I stared at my phone. Then another message arrived. AND PLEASE DON'T CALL AMARA. I looked at the call log. Her number was still there. I called back. The number was switched off. That was when I realized something. I had never met this woman. I didn't know her. She didn't know me. Yet somehow… she had just sent me ₦10 million. And three different people suddenly seemed very interested in making sure I didn't return it. Then another message came. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY YOU RECEIVED THE MONEY, COME TO THE ADDRESS BELOW. An address appeared. Then one final sentence: COME ALONE. I stared at it. I should have deleted the message. Instead, I started getting dressed.
