The Second Term.

Election is coming and there's already a lot of rampage about who will rule this country next.And with these clowns posing as politicians, saying some of the most ridiculous things about what their manifestos are... I saw one saying he'll give all of us solar panels.Another one said we won't pay rent again.Another saying students won't need to write examination again, a swearing that they understand is enough.And just like that, politics became a place for cruise.🙂 Maybe I should join a political party and promise free iphone for all Nigerian youths.🙂 But that's besides the point.Let's talk about this thing called Second Term. I'm a fan of Tinubu, by the way.But I've been thinking...Will Tinubu do well if he gets a second term? I've been looking at the pattern of second terms, or more accurately, how some Nigerian presidents have performed after getting another shot at power.And I started wondering if there's actually something to learn from it. Let's go back a little. I'll start with Buhari.Muhammadu Buhari was elected president in 2015 and re-elected in 2019. Before that, he had also served as Nigeria's military head of state from 1983 to 1985.During his first elected term, his administration focused heavily on three things: security, the economy and the fight against corruption. There were also major infrastructure projects and reforms across different sectors.The administration pointed to achievements in areas including roads, rail, power, agriculture, social investment and anti-corruption efforts.Whether you believe the administration delivered enough is another argument entirely.But there were things to point to. Then came the second term. And personally, I felt a noticeable difference.The administration seemed less energetic to me, while other issues became increasingly difficult to ignore.Buhari also dealt with serious health problems during his years in office.So I started wondering... Does something change when a president knows he doesn't have another four years in power? Let's move to Goodluck Jonathan. This one is slightly different.Jonathan didn't come into the presidency through two elections. He became president in 2010 after the death of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, having previously served as vice president.He was then elected president in his own right in 2011. His administration had notable achievements, but his presidency also faced serious criticism, particularly around insecurity, corruption and economic management. And eventually, he lost the 2015 election. So again, the pattern isn't as simple as:first term good, second term bad. Which brings me to another country.America.Donald Trump. His first presidency was filled with major policy changes and controversies. His administration passed large tax cuts, pursued deregulation, created the Space Force, renegotiated NAFTA into the USMCA and made significant changes to immigration and foreign policy.If you're familiar with international politics, you'll understand the picture I'm trying to paint. Now he's back for a second term. And this second term?Let's just say... Eventful.Very eventful....🙂 But it's still ongoing, so history hasn't finished writing that chapter yet. And now we come back home. Nigeria.Bola Ahmed Tinubu.The Jagaban Himself. I won't pretend I don't admire this man.I do.I think he's intelligent.I think he's strategic. And whether you like him or not, his political career shows that he understands how power works. His administration has introduced major reforms, including fuel subsidy removal, foreign-exchange reforms, the CNG initiative and NELFUND, among others.But my biggest issue is implementation. You can have a brilliant policy on paper and still have a terrible outcome if the execution isn't good enough. And that's where I think Tinubu's administration deserves the most scrutiny. Not just “What policy did he introduce?”or “What did he do?”But:What happened after the announcement?Did it work?Did Nigerians actually feel it?Was there a backup plan?What happened when the first plan didn't go as expected? Because politics isn't just about having good ideas.It's about what those ideas become when they meet reality. Now Tinubu is seeking a second term in 2027. His nomination has already been submitted by the APC, and the party has moved to present him as its presidential candidate. And this is where my curiosity really begins.Because imagine giving a man who already has four years of experience in the highest office in the country another four years.He already knows the system.He already knows the players.He already understands the machinery of government.He has money.He has influence.He has political experience.He has spent decades building relationships and understanding how power moves.In my opinion, that's a very powerful position to be in. So if the first four years were the period of setting things in motion... What exactly would the second four years look like? Would he become more effective because he now understands the system better? Would he finally have enough time to properly execute some of the policies that have struggled during the first term? Or would the comfort of knowing that he doesn't have to seek another term after 2027 change the way the government operates? I genuinely don't know. And that's what makes me curious... I'm not saying Tinubu's second term will be good.I'm not saying it will be bad either. I'm asking the question. Because we've seen what happened with previous administrations. We've seen how different leaders handled power after gaining more experience. And now we're about to watch another one attempt it. So...How would Tinubu's second term be?Would things be different? Whatever your political preference is, one thing remains important:Vote. The 2027 presidential election is officially scheduled for February according to INEC. Think.Look at the candidates, their records, their policies, their manifestoes.Look at what they've actually done.And then make your decision. You could literally have a child during that next four-year period.Think about the kind of country that child would be born into. Whether you participate in politics or not, the consequences of politics would affect us all.
