THE “SOCIETy” WE KEEP BLAMING

My first ever insight on this space 🫠. I’m nervous guys, i hope you enjoy it, and I’d love to hear your opinions as well. When people talk about “THE SOCIETY,” what do we mean and what group of people immediately comes to mind? Gen X? Millennials? Gen Z? Or Gen Alpha? But then, can we really say Gen X? They’re still very much around, but they’ve handed over the microphone to the younger generations. And millennials? They’re slowly entering their “back in my days” era. Gen Z? We’re the new adults, while Gen Alpha are still largely the upcoming generation. So then, when we talk about “society,” who exactly are we talking about? We often speak about “society” as though it is some separate entity imposing social norms on us, when in reality, society is made up of people who also participate in creating, maintaining, and challenging those norms. In other words, society is us ( the people ).Of course, society is bigger than any one individual. Our families, institutions, culture, religion, media, laws and communities all play a role in shaping these norms. But these structures are ultimately sustained by people. And that means we are not merely products of society; we are also participants in creating it. And I think we are often too quick to blame everything on society without realising that WE are the society. “Society says a woman should do this.”“Society says a man should do that.”“Society shames women for things men do. Ooh, the double standards!”“Society doesn’t allow men to be weak.” But Precious—I don’t know why I chose the name. If you’re a Precious reading this, I promise it’s not aimed at you 😭—just yesterday, you shamed a woman for being a single mother. Just yesterday, you called a guy “gay” for expressing happiness a little too openly for the way “society” says a man should. You mocked him for being emotional. But when it happens to you, suddenly, it’s “society.” We are quick to condemn social norms when they work against us, yet sometimes we are perfectly willing to reproduce those same norms when they benefit us or when we want to judge someone else. And perhaps that is the problem. The popular saying “charity begins at home” is not far from the truth. We are now the generation that younger people are beginning to look up to. With all the emphasis we place on being the “woke” generation, why are we still repeating the same patterns we claim to reject? This is a call for us to do better. Because WE are the society. And we cannot expect society to change while refusing to examine the ways in which we contribute to keeping it the same. We cannot demand change from society when we are not willing to change ourselves. In essence, be the change you want to see.🌹
