THE BATTLE — PART 2

BIG MADAM: I see… In that case, I’m all ears.

MRS. THERESA: This is no place for little brats. Only NMA members are allowed.

BIG MADAM: Mrs. Theresa! He’s Hajiya Aisha’s son. At least treat him with respect. Besides, he seems to want to be of assistance, so let’s hear him out.

MRS. THERESA: What assistance could a kid like him possibly offer?

FAROUQ THE SNITCH: Thank you, Big Madam, for agreeing to listen to me. Madam Theresa, I abhor you to at least listen before leaping to conclusions.

MRS. THERESA: Out with it then. What do you—

FAROUQ: Information. I have information on the gangs involved in this skirmish, and I have something that will assist you in finding their location.

BIG MADAM: Interesting. Let’s hear it.

Farouq brings out a laptop from his bag, along with several photographs.

---

Meanwhile, the meeting between the heads of the Eagle Wings boys and the Apex boys has commenced.

GABRIEL: So, out with it. Your boys attacked one of my men and confiscated one of our transport vehicles.

He pauses.

GABRIEL: A bicycle. What do you have to say for yourself? Answer me!

IDRIS: Calm down, Gabe. Calm down. Take a chill pill, bruh.

BLACK ONE: See this guy. Which one be calm down again? You dey ment? I go—

MIKE TYSON: You say wetin? Wetin you go do? I go—

The two are about to have a standoff when Gabriel intervenes.

GABRIEL: B-1, easy! Take a seat.

The two reluctantly take their seats, all the while staring viciously at each other.

GABRIEL: So, about the apology you promised.

IDRIS: Oh yes, about that… I really am genuinely sorry about what happened. I sincerely apologize for beating up your man. I really didn’t want to…

He pauses dramatically.

IDRIS: But you see… it was necessary for me to do so.

---

Back at the NMA headquarters, Farouq presents the intel he has gathered on the gang leaders.

FAROUQ: After the NMA’s successful crackdown on Area Boys activities eight years ago, their activities became almost non-existent, thanks to Big Madam’s brilliant leadership.

MRS. THERESA: Like we haven’t heard that before.

FAROUQ: As I was saying, Area Boys activities were brought to an end… until four years ago.

The women are shocked by Farouq’s words. They had all assumed that the Area Boys were a thing of the past.

MRS. THERESA: What nonsense are you saying? Area Boys are no more. We—

Big Madam beckons for her to keep quiet.

FAROUQ: Four years ago, the Area Boys were revived in the form of secondary school gangs.

The women listen intently.

FAROUQ: The NMA remained oblivious to this development because these new gangs discovered a way to keep information from reaching the NMA. Information is power, you see, and they were able to control the flow of information, which meant that their safety was pretty much guaranteed.

BIG MADAM: The INTEL Division?

FAROUQ: You catch on quick, as expected of the NMA’s commander. The gang members were able to control the NMA’s INTEL Division by bribing its members—their younger sisters.

MRS. THERESA: Impossible! The INTEL Division would never stoop so low as to accept bribes.

FAROUQ: Things aren’t always as you expect. You should be glad you still have trustworthy people in the division, like Agent Ngozi.

HAJIYA AISHA: So tell us about the gangs involved in today’s fight.

FAROUQ: That I will do, but before then, I have something for you.

He walks outside and returns with a large bag.

HAJIYA AISHA: What’s that?

FAROUQ: Didn’t I say I could help you find the boys’ location?

He opens the bag and pulls out a remote-controlled drone equipped with a camera.

FAROUQ: I present to you, the—

HAJIYA AISHA: Isn’t that the drone that your dad bought you in Dubai?

FAROUQ: Mummy, why?

BIG MADAM: Christina!

CHRISTINA: On it.

Mrs. Christina is the commander of Section 10, which is in charge of surveillance.

She takes the drone from Farouq and hands the controls to one of the women in her squad.

The drone is placed outside the house and flies away.

Its camera is connected wirelessly to a mobile phone being operated by one of Christina’s women.

FAROUQ: Where were we? Oh, that’s right.

He picks up one of the photographs.

FAROUQ: The two groups involved are the Eagle Wings College boys and the Apex Academy boys.

FAROUQ: Both groups rose to prominence recently when their current leaders took over.

He points to a photograph.

FAROUQ: The leader of the Eagle Wings boys is Gabriel Okafor. He is known on the streets as Gabriel the Giant, rightfully so, considering his gigantic build. He towers over most secondary school students and prides himself on his physical prowess.

FAROUQ: Gabriel has been fairly popular since his JSS3 days, when he beat up four SS2 students by himself.

He picks up another photograph.

FAROUQ: The leader of the Apex boys is this man.

He points at the photograph.

FAROUQ: Idris Musa. His street name is Idi Escobar.

FAROUQ: Unlike Gabriel, Idris is of a more fragile constitution and was not particularly popular. He only gained notoriety fairly recently when he became the Apex boys’ leader.

He pauses.

FAROUQ: However, whatever Idris lacked in brawn, he made up for in brains.

The women lean forward.

FAROUQ: I conducted my own investigations on the man with the help of ‘informants’—

He pauses.

FAROUQ: Snitches.

FAROUQ: And what I uncovered was shocking.

---

Meanwhile, back at the warehouse, things are heating up.

GABRIEL: What did you just say?!

IDRIS: Exactly as you heard. You see, your man was conducting business in my turf, so I had to teach him a lesson. But I have to say, my men did go a little overboard, and I apologize for that.

He leans back.

IDRIS: And as for the transport vehicle… it belongs to us now.

GABRIEL: Don’t mess with me, Escobar! That was clearly within my territory!

Gabriel slams his hand on the table, instantly snapping it in half.

The Eagle Wings boys put their hands inside their jackets and pull out their weapons.

They are all wielding the same type of weapon.

A weapon responsible for so many casualties in secondary school…

The pen.

IDRIS: Wow. 55-inch, 200-caliber pens. Impressive stuff. I have to say, your men are well armed.

He smiles.

IDRIS: As they say, the pen is mightier than the sword…

He pauses.

IDRIS: But you see… the compass is mightier than the pen.

Idris’ men pull out their own weapons.

The most devastating melee weapon in secondary school history.

The mighty compass.

To be continued...
