What are we?

Sometimes,I think about how strange it is to be a person.

Not in the dramatic sense. I mean literally.

To be here.

A collection of dust that somehow became conscious enough to look at the stars and wonder why they exist. At some point, atoms that had no idea what a thought was became me. They learned how to remember. To miss people. To become embarrassed by things that happened five years ago. To hear a song and suddenly be seventeen again.

That alone feels almost impossible.

We walk around so casually with this miracle inside us.

We wake up, brush our teeth, check our phones, complain about money, answer messages, rush somewhere. We get so used to being alive that we forget how insane it actually is.

Every morning, we return from somewhere we cannot explain.

Think about sleep for a second.

You lie down and surrender your entire consciousness.

The room is still there. Your body is still breathing. Your heart keeps working without asking you for permission. And then, somehow, you disappear.

Hours pass.

Maybe you dream that you're somewhere else. Maybe you're running through a city you've never seen. Maybe you're speaking to someone who doesn't exist anymore. Maybe you're falling, flying, dying, becoming someone else entirely.

And then you open your eyes.

The ceiling.

Your phone.

Morning light.

You have returned.

And somehow we just call that sleeping.

I don't know. That word feels too small for what is happening.

There are so many things about being alive that we have made ordinary simply because they happen every day.

The fact that you can hear rain and have a feeling about it.

The fact that your body knows how to heal a wound without you instructing it.

The fact that you can look at another human being and, without touching them, somehow feel understood.

The fact that memories can hurt even though they no longer physically exist.

The fact that a person can leave your life and still occupy a room inside your mind for years.

We are strange creatures.

Part blessing. Part curse.

We inherit things we never asked for: our bodies, our fears, our names, our countries, our families, the circumstances that shaped us before we were old enough to understand any of them.

And then, somewhere along the way, we start becoming ourselves.

Or at least trying to.

Maybe that is what being human really is.

Not discovering some perfectly hidden identity underneath everything.

Maybe it's the slow construction of a self from whatever life gives you.

A little trauma here.

A little laughter there.

Some love.

Some embarrassment.

A few people who change you permanently.

Some things you survive.

Some things you never quite get over.

Some strange obsession you can't explain.

A thousand tiny choices nobody else will ever know about.

And somehow all of it becomes one person.

You.

That person you keep criticizing for not having everything figured out.

That person who has survived every version of themselves they've already been.

That person who has no idea what the next five years will look like, but is still here, reading this, breathing without thinking about it.

There is something beautiful about that.

We spend so much of life trying to become extraordinary that we forget how extraordinary the ordinary already is.

You don't need to become famous to justify your existence.

You don't need to build something that outlives you.

You don't even need to fully understand yourself.

For a brief and completely unrepeatable stretch of time, you get to be conscious.

You get to experience this strange little universe from behind your own eyes.

You get to love things.

You get to lose them.

You get to change your mind.

You get to become someone your younger self couldn't have imagined.

And eventually, like everything else, you will return to whatever you came from.

Dust to dust, perhaps.

But for now, the dust is awake.

And it is thinking.

It is looking at the sky.

It is wondering what the hell all of this is.

I think that's beautiful enough.
