When Your Potential Becomes a Public Budget.

There is a strange pressure that comes with being seen as someone who is doing well. Once people start noticing your progress, they sometimes create a version of you in their heads that is far ahead of where you actually are. You get an opportunity, and suddenly people assume you have money.You post your work, and they assume you are financially comfortable. They see the organisations you work with, the places you go, the things you achieve, and somehow, in their minds, you should already be driving a big car, using the latest iPhone, living in a nice estate and paying for things without thinking twice. Meanwhile, you are somewhere calculating your transport fare. 😂 And that is the part people don't always see. I am working. I am building. I am taking opportunities seriously. I am graduating from university soon and trying to figure out what the next stage of my life looks like. But I am not rich.And there is absolutely nothing embarrassing about saying that.Sometimes, I genuinely don't have the money. Not because I am lazy.Not because I lack ambition. And certainly not because I am secretly making money from things I cannot explain. I am not doing Yahoo. I am not committing fraud. I am not living a fake lifestyle behind the scenes. If I have money, I want to know exactly where it came from.If I buy something, I want to know that I can afford it.If I cannot afford something, I want to be comfortable enough to say, "I can't afford that." That shouldn't be shameful.But somehow, once people see you making progress, they begin to attach expectations to it. "Your mate has bought a car." "You're doing well now. You should be able to afford this.""You should have upgraded your phone by now.""You should be living somewhere better.""You should be able to help with this."Sometimes, I just laugh. Because looking like you are doing well and having unlimited money are two completely different things. I can wear a good shirt without having money for a car.I can attend an important event without having money for an apartment in an estate.I can work with impressive organisations without having millions in my account.I can have big dreams while still being very much in the process of building my life. And honestly, I don't want to rush that process just to satisfy somebody else's expectations. If I have ₦100 and something I need costs ₦50, I don't have to spend the entire ₦100 just because someone thinks I should be able to afford more. There is wisdom in knowing the difference between having money and spending money.There is also wisdom in knowing that progress does not always have to look expensive. Maybe the car will come later.Maybe the better phone will come later.Maybe the house will come later.Maybe some things will take much longer than people expect. That's okay.God's timing does not follow society's timetable.And this is bigger than money. Sometimes, people see your potential and turn it into an obligation.Because you are capable, they expect you to carry everything.Because you have helped before, they expect you to always help.Because you are hardworking, they assume you are always available.Because you are making progress, they assume you have no problems of your own. But you are allowed to have limits.You are allowed to be building.You are allowed to say no.You are allowed to be young and still figuring things out. So, please, reduce your expectations from me, I'm not doing fraud ohh😂 Not because I don't want to do well.Because I actually want to do well for real. I don't want to look rich.I want to be financially secure.I don't want to impress people with things I cannot sustain. I want to build with money I can explain, work I can be proud of, and opportunities I genuinely earned. There will always be someone with a newer iPhone, a bigger car, a better house, more money or a longer list of achievements. Let them. Their progress doesn't make mine smaller.And my current reality doesn't make me a failure. I am still building.I am still learning.I am still working.I am still becoming. So if your expectations of me are based entirely on what you see online, the opportunities I receive, or the person you think I should already have become... Please adjust them. 😂 I don't owe anyone a performance of success.I would rather build slowly and honestly than rush into a lifestyle I cannot afford. Because at the end of the day, I'd rather have a life that is genuinely mine than a life I had to perform for everybody else. I don't want to look rich. I want to be at peace with what I have.And if that means disappointing a few expectations along the way... So be it. 😂
