Why Being a Good Person Isn't Always Enough

I used to believe that being a good person was enough.

If I treated people well, stayed loyal, helped when I could, and never intentionally hurt anyone, I believed life would somehow return the same energy to me.

I was wrong.

Sometimes, you can be good to people who will still betray you.

You can be loyal to someone who wouldn't choose you.

You can show up for people who disappear when you need them most.

And the hardest part isn't always what they did.

Sometimes, it's realizing that you would never have done the same thing to them.

That realization can change you.

But I don't think the answer is to become cold.

I've learned that being a good person doesn't mean saying yes to everyone. It doesn't mean forgiving the same person endlessly. It doesn't mean allowing people to disrespect you just because you understand their struggles.

You can have a good heart and still have boundaries.

You can forgive someone and still walk away.

You can love people and still choose yourself.

Because goodness without boundaries can become self-destruction.

And honestly, I don't want to become a worse person because someone treated me badly.

I just want to become wiser about who gets access to the best parts of me.

So I'll still be kind.

I'll still help when I can.

I'll still believe in people.

But I'll also learn to say no.

I'll stop chasing people who don't value me.

I'll stop explaining my worth to people committed to misunderstanding it.

And I'll stop believing that losing someone automatically means I lost something valuable.

Sometimes, you don't need a harder heart.

You just need stronger boundaries.

Because being a good person isn't always enough.

But being good without losing yourself?

That's the kind of goodness worth keeping.
