A love of firsts

I don’t want to wait until I’m forty to get married.

I want to get married early (not very early though) not because I’m in a hurry to wear a white dress or because I’m afraid of being alone, but because I want to build a life with someone from the beginning.

I don’t want to marry someone who has already lived an entire life without me. Someone who has already experienced all the things I wanted us to experience together. Someone who has already been married two, three, four times. Someone who already has three or four children. Someone whose greatest firsts have already happened with someone else.

I want a love of firsts.

I want to be your first real dinner date. Your first vacation with someone you love. Your first proposal. Your first home. Your first “we’re actually doing this” moment. I want our wedding to be your first wedding, just as I want it to be mine. I want us to stand there nervous and excited, knowing neither of us has done this before.

I want to have your first child, not because children from another relationship would make you less worthy of my love, but because there is something beautiful to me about experiencing that beginning together. Learning together. Being terrified together. Becoming parents for the first time together.

I want us to look back years later and realize that so much of our story was built from scratch.

Our first apartment.

Our first Christmas together.

Our first trip.

Our first anniversary.

Our first family photo.

Our first home.

Our first child.

Our first grey hairs.

I want the memories to belong to us.

I don't want to step into a life that was already fully lived and simply find a place for myself inside it. I want to build the life with you.

I want to know what it feels like to grow alongside someone, to meet each other young, to make mistakes, to change, to learn, to become better, and still choose each other through every version of ourselves.

Maybe that sounds idealistic. Maybe life doesn't always work that way, but if I have a choice, that's what I want.

I want a love where we are not looking back at everything we had before each other. i want us looking forward at everything we haven't experienced yet. So no, I don't want to wait until I'm forty just to say I finally got married.

I want to get married while we still have most of our life ahead of us.

I want to build the memories.

I want to build the home.

I want to build the family.

I want to build the life.

With you.
