BACK TO MY ROOT

For years, Daniel believed leaving was the same thing as making it.

He left the village with one small bag, two shirts, and a promise to his mother.

“I’ll come back when I have something to show.”

The city welcomed him with noise, bright lights, and a life that moved too quickly to ask questions.

Years passed.

Daniel got a good job. Bought expensive clothes. Learned how to speak differently. He stopped eating the food he grew up with because it reminded him of where he came from.

Whenever his mother called, he was always busy.

“Another time, Mama.”

Then one evening, she stopped calling.

Daniel returned for her burial.

The village looked smaller than he remembered.

The old mango tree was still there. The dusty road was still there. Even the old wooden chair outside their house was still there.

But his mother wasn't.

That night, he sat beneath the mango tree and listened to the silence.

For the first time in years, he wasn't thinking about promotions, money, or what people in the city thought of him.

He was thinking about the boy who had left this place.

The boy who used to run barefoot.

The boy who knew every face in the village.

The boy who once believed that having less did not mean being less.

Daniel looked at his expensive shoes, covered in village dust.

And somehow, he smiled.

He finally understood.

He hadn't come back because he had failed in the city.

He had come back because somewhere along the way, he had succeeded at becoming someone he no longer recognized.

And sometimes, going back isn't moving backwards.

Sometimes, it is the first step toward finding yourself again.
