Dear Esther, Ask Faye

<h3>SO WHO WAS ACTUALLY WRONG?</h3> Nobody wanted to ask the question. Not BigDan. Not Esther. Not Faye. Not Big Dee. Not even John. But it was sitting in the middle of the room like an unpaid bill. Who was actually wrong? They had spent five episodes interrogating each other. BigDan had been questioned about his old insights. Esther had been questioned about her questions. Faye had been questioned about her advice. Big Dee had been questioned about her memory. John had been questioned about his silence. Now there was nowhere left to hide. Esther looked around. “So…” BigDan immediately knew where this was going. “No.” “I haven't said anything.” “I know your face.” Big Dee laughed. “Let her ask.” Faye smiled. John continued eating. Esther looked at everybody. “After everything we've said, who was actually wrong?” Silence. BigDan cleared his throat. “Well, technically.....” “Don't say technically,” Big Dee interrupted. “Why?” “Because that's how people begin avoiding the truth.” Faye laughed. BigDan looked offended. “I was going to give a thoughtful answer.” “You were going to give a BigDan answer,” Esther said. “What is a BigDan answer?” “Something that sounds deep enough to escape responsibility.” The room exploded. BigDan pointed at her. “You've become very confident since Episode Two.” “That's because I survived it.” Faye shook her head. “This family is impossible.” John finally spoke. “Maybe nobody was wrong.” Everybody looked at him. Big Dee frowned. “That sounds suspiciously peaceful.” John shrugged. “Because sometimes there isn't one wrong person.” Esther nodded slowly. “Go on.” “Sometimes two people can both be right about different things.” BigDan leaned forward. “That is one of the biggest problems with advice.” Faye nodded. “Exactly. Context changes everything.” Big Dee smiled. “So all our beautiful TwoCents statements come with an asterisk?” “Obviously,” Faye said. BigDan looked confused. “Obviously?” “Yes.” Esther joined in. “A TwoCents insight is an observation. It isn't a law.” Big Dee nodded. “You can write, ‘Never chase anybody.’” John looked up. “And sometimes you need to chase the person you love before they leave your life.” Faye added, “You can say, ‘If they wanted to, they would.’” Esther continued. “And sometimes they want to, but they don't know how.” BigDan nodded. “You can say, ‘Forgive and move on.’” Big Dee smiled. “And sometimes you need to forgive but stay exactly where you are not.” John added quietly, “You can love someone and still know they are wrong for you.” The room went quiet. BigDan smiled. “So maybe the problem wasn't the insights.” Esther looked at him. “It was us.” Faye nodded. “We turned observations into commandments.” Big Dee snapped her fingers. “That's it.” BigDan leaned back. “That is actually what we've been doing.” He looked around the room. “We took sentences that were written for a moment and started treating them like instructions for every situation.” Esther smiled. “Which is dangerous.” Faye nodded. “Because life doesn't repeat itself exactly.” John added, “People don't either.” Big Dee looked at him. “Sometimes people repeat themselves.” John smiled. “That's why we have Big Dee.” Everybody laughed. BigDan shook his head. Then Esther asked the question nobody expected. “Do you think we've actually learned anything?” BigDan said, “Absolutely.” Faye said, “Some things.” Big Dee said, “I have.” John shrugged. “Maybe.” Esther frowned. “Maybe?” John looked around the room. “Knowing something and living it are different things.” Silence. BigDan nodded. “That might be the hardest lesson.” Faye smiled. “We've spent years writing about forgiveness, communication, love, boundaries, self-worth, friendship, trust…” “And still made mistakes,” Big Dee added. “Plenty,” Esther said. BigDan laughed. “That doesn't make the lessons useless.” “No,” Faye said. “It makes us human.” Big Dee leaned back. “So perhaps the point of TwoCents was never to make us perfect.” John looked at her. “Maybe it was to make us think.” Esther nodded. “And question.” Faye added, “And reconsider.” BigDan smiled. “And sometimes laugh at ourselves.” Big Dee pointed at him. “Especially you.” “Why especially me?” “Because you have written enough advice to fill a library.” “And?” “You still make questionable decisions.” BigDan sighed. “Fair.” Everyone laughed. Then Esther stood up. “Wait.” Everybody looked at her. “If nobody was actually wrong…” She paused. “Then why did we spend six episodes fighting?” John answered immediately. “Because that's what families do.” Big Dee laughed. “That's what people do.” Faye smiled. “Maybe arguments aren't always about finding a winner.” BigDan nodded. “Sometimes they're about discovering what you really believe.” Esther looked at everyone. “So what happens to all the old TwoCents insights?” BigDan thought for a moment. “We keep them.” Faye nodded. “But we question them.” Big Dee added, “We challenge them.” John said, “We test them against real life.” Esther smiled. “And when they no longer make sense?” BigDan shrugged. “We write something better.” There was silence. Then Big Dee smiled. “Look at us.” “What?” Faye asked. “We actually learned something.” John shook his head. “Don't get carried away.” Everybody laughed. BigDan looked around the room. Maybe that was the real TwoCents lesson. Not that somebody always knows the answer. Not that every relationship can be fixed. Not that every person who walks away should be chased. Not that every apology deserves another chance. Not that silence is wisdom. Not that remembering is healing. Not even that forgiveness is always necessary. Maybe the real lesson was simpler. <blockquote>“Wisdom is not having an answer for everything. Sometimes, wisdom is knowing when your answer needs another question.”</blockquote> Esther smiled. Faye nodded. Big Dee leaned back. John returned to his food. And BigDan picked up his phone. Esther noticed. “You're writing?” “Of course.” “What are you writing?” BigDan smiled. “The next TwoCents.” Big Dee groaned. “After all this?” He nodded. “After all this.” Faye laughed. “We are never escaping.” John looked up. “Maybe that's the point.” <h4> </h4><h4>THE FAMILY TAKEAWAY</h4> There are lessons that help us. There are lessons that challenge us. And there are lessons we eventually outgrow. The mistake is treating wisdom like a fixed set of rules. Life changes. People change. Relationships change. We change. Something that was right for you five years ago may not be right for you today. Something that helped one person may hurt another. A beautiful sentence can still be incomplete. So question the advice. Question your assumptions. Question your own behaviour too. Listen to people you disagree with. Change your mind when the evidence changes. And don't be so proud of your old wisdom that you become incapable of learning something new. Because maybe the biggest TwoCents insight of all is this: <blockquote>You don't have to be right all the time to be wise. You just have to be willing to learn when you are wrong.</blockquote> And perhaps that is why Esther kept asking questions. Why Faye kept giving advice. Why Big Dee kept remembering.
