<h3>BIG DEE REMEMBERS EVERYTHING</h3> Big Dee had a dangerous gift. She remembered everything. Not just birthdays. Not just important dates. Everything. She remembered what you said five years ago. She remembered what you said when you were angry. She remembered what you said when you thought nobody was listening. And if you ever said, “I never said that,” Big Dee would look at you with the calm confidence of somebody who had screenshots. Which was why Esther knew exactly who to question next. “Big Dee.” Big Dee looked up. “Yes?” “We have questions.” Big Dee immediately looked at Faye. “Why does everybody in this family suddenly have questions?” Faye smiled. “Because you have spent your whole life asking questions.” BigDan nodded. “And remembering everybody's answers.” Big Dee frowned. “I don't see the problem.” John quietly said, “That's because you remember the problem too.” Everybody laughed. Big Dee pointed at him. “John, don't start. You barely talk.” “Exactly.” That shut everybody up for two seconds. Then Esther leaned forward. “Big Dee, why do you remember people's mistakes so well?” Big Dee shrugged. “Because people repeat them.” “That wasn't my question.” “It was my answer.” Faye laughed. “You know, this is why arguments with Big Dee never end.” BigDan nodded. “She doesn't argue to win. She argues until everybody is tired.” Big Dee smiled. “That's called endurance.” Esther shook her head. “Let's be serious. Do you remember people's good moments too?” Big Dee paused. “Yes.” “As clearly as their bad moments?” Another pause. “Not always.” Faye nodded. “There.” “There what?” “We found it.” Big Dee narrowed her eyes. “Found what?” “The problem.” BigDan leaned back. “We naturally keep better records of pain.” Big Dee looked at him. “That sounds like something you wrote on TwoCents.” “It probably is.” “You people have been writing these things for years and still don't follow them.” Esther laughed. “That is actually the point of this whole series.” BigDan looked offended. “I follow some of them.” “Name three,” Big Dee said. Silence. John looked at him. “Take your time.” Everybody laughed. BigDan surrendered. “Fine.” But Big Dee had suddenly become serious. “Let's not make remembering sound like a bad thing,” she said. “Sometimes people hurt you and then expect you to forget because remembering makes them uncomfortable.” Faye nodded. “That happens.” “You forgive them,” Big Dee continued, “and suddenly they think the incident has been deleted from history.” Esther smiled. “That part is true.” Big Dee leaned forward. “Forgiveness doesn't mean amnesia.” BigDan nodded. <blockquote>“You can forgive someone without pretending they never hurt you.”</blockquote> Faye added, “And you can remember what happened without spending the rest of your life angry about it.” Big Dee nodded. “Exactly.” John asked, “So what's the difference between remembering and holding a grudge?” Big Dee thought about it. <blockquote>“Memory helps you make better decisions. A grudge keeps making the same decision for you.”</blockquote> Everybody went quiet. Esther slowly nodded. “That is good.” Big Dee smiled. “I know.” “There she goes again,” Faye said. Big Dee laughed. But John wasn't finished. “What if someone apologises?” “You decide whether the apology is genuine.” “What if they really mean it?” “Then you can accept it.” “Do you have to trust them again?” “No.” John nodded. That answer seemed to satisfy him. BigDan didn't let it end there. “So forgiveness and trust are different?” “Very different.” Big Dee folded her arms. <blockquote>“Forgiveness is about what you choose to carry. Trust is about what you allow someone to handle.”</blockquote> Faye smiled. “That one is going on TwoCents.” Big Dee laughed. “Everything I say suddenly becomes content.” BigDan raised his phone. “Occupational hazard.” “That's why I don't tell you people anything.” Esther smiled. “But you tell us everything.” “I tell you what I want you to know.” BigDan looked at her. “That's exactly what people say when they are hiding something.” Big Dee threw a cushion at him. “Don't interview me in my own house.” The laughter returned. But Esther had one final question. “When do you know it's time to let the past go?” Big Dee became quiet. “When remembering stops helping you and starts controlling you.” Nobody interrupted. She continued. “You can remember what somebody did. You can learn from it. You can change your boundaries because of it. But if you keep replaying it every morning just to hurt yourself again, then the person who hurt you isn't the only one doing the damage anymore.” Faye nodded slowly. BigDan put his phone down. John looked at Big Dee. “So you don't believe people should forget?” “No.” “Then what should they do?” Big Dee smiled. “Remember differently.” Esther frowned. “Explain.” <blockquote>“You remember the lesson, not just the pain.”</blockquote> Silence. <blockquote>Then Big Dee added: “You don't have to forget the wound. Just don't keep picking at it to prove that it was real.”</blockquote> Faye nodded. “That is the whole thing.” BigDan smiled. “Big Dee has officially become wise.” “Don't push it.” John suddenly smiled. “Big Dee…” “Yes?” “Do you remember when you said you don't hold grudges?” Big Dee froze. Esther burst out laughing. Faye covered her face. BigDan nearly fell off his chair. Big Dee stared at John. “You waited this whole time to say that?” John shrugged. “I remembered.” Big Dee shook her head. “This family is exhausting.” Esther smiled. “No. This family remembers.” THE FAMILY TAKEAWAY Remembering is not the same as holding a grudge. The past can teach you what boundaries to set, who to trust and what patterns to avoid. But there is a difference between learning from pain and living inside it. Forgiveness does not erase history. Trust does not have to return simply because an apology was accepted. And moving forward does not require pretending that nothing happened. Sometimes healing is simply being able to remember what happened without allowing it to control what happens next. Because the goal is not to forget the past. The goal is to stop letting the past write your future.
