Do We Love People, or Do We Love How They Make Us Feel?

Have you ever wondered whether you actually love someone, or whether you simply love the way you feel when you're around them?

Sometimes, we meet someone who makes us feel understood, appreciated, safe or excited. We enjoy talking to them, spending time with them and knowing that they care about us. Eventually, we may call that feeling love.

But what exactly are we attached to?

The person, or the experience they give us?

Think about it.

If someone is always making you happy, listening to you, supporting you and making you feel valued, it's natural to become attached to them. But if those things suddenly disappear, would your feelings remain the same?

That's where things get interesting.

Loving someone means appreciating them as a person — their personality, imperfections, values, dreams and even the parts of them that don't directly benefit you.

Sometimes, however, what we call love can actually be attachment to comfort, attention, validation or companionship.

And I don't think that necessarily makes the feeling fake. Human emotions are complicated. We can genuinely care about someone while also being attached to how they make us feel.

Maybe that's why losing someone can hurt so much. You're not only losing the person. You're also losing the conversations, the attention, the memories, the comfort and the version of yourself that existed around them.

So perhaps the real question isn't simply “Do I love this person?”

Maybe it's:

“If they could no longer give me the things I love receiving from them, would I still value them for who they are?”

That's a difficult question.

And honestly, I don't think there's always an easy answer.
