Erb's palsy
<p>Have you ever heard of Erb’s palsy?</p><p>Imagine a baby being born, but one of their arms is weaker than the other. The baby may have difficulty moving the arm, lifting it, or bending the elbow.</p><p>What could be responsible for this?</p><p>One possible cause is Erb’s palsy.</p><p>Erb’s palsy is a condition that affects the nerves responsible for movement and sensation in the shoulder and arm. These nerves form part of a network called the brachial plexus, which carries signals from the spinal cord to the arm.</p><p>In newborns, this condition commonly occurs when these nerves are stretched or injured during childbirth.</p><p>How can you recognise it?</p><p>A baby with Erb’s palsy may:</p><p>Have difficulty moving one arm.</p><p>Have weakness around the shoulder.</p><p>Struggle to bend the elbow.</p><p>Hold the affected arm in an unusual position.</p><p>The severity varies. Some babies recover naturally, while others require medical treatment and rehabilitation.</p><p>But here is something important: Erb’s palsy does not mean that a child can never use the affected arm normally again. Recovery depends on the extent of the nerve injury, and early assessment can make a difference in planning appropriate care.</p><p>As a Physiotherapy student, I believe that creating awareness about conditions like this is important. Sometimes, understanding a condition is the first step towards recognising the need for help.</p><p>Over the next few posts, I'll be discussing what causes Erb’s palsy, whether it can be prevented, and the role of physiotherapy in its management.</p>
