Mental Illness and Motherhood: Can Compassion and Justice Coexist?
<p>Three lives lost. Their mother admits it was her doing. However,she was experiencing psychosis,what should be done? Throw her into prison?</p><p><br/></p><p>Before we judge,let's have better knowledge on what's going on here</p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p><p>Postpartum psychosis is a rare but severe psychiatric emergency that occurs shortly after childbirth, evidenced by loss of contact with reality (for instance having delusions and hallucinations)</p><p><br/></p><p>In her statements, she said she heard a voice telling her it's her chance to escape</p><p><br/></p><p>And I know you may say,"her last child was 8 months already, and she had a long time to heal", but did she??</p><p><br/></p><p>She sought help,she said she was losing it,she spoke of suicidal thoughts, and somehow,after how many weeks of treatment,they thought it was safe for her to be with the kids she thought of harming ??</p><p><br/></p><p>Does it make sense to you?</p><p><br/></p><p>Now,the deed is done. The lives of three humans lost. Should we blame her??Even when she wasn't in her right mind when all this happened. Even when she tried to take her life afterwards and failed.</p><p><br/></p><p>"What if it wasn't intentional"</p><p>"what's the right thing to do"?</p><p>Admit her for psychiatric treatment,and she's not allowed to leave till she's medically, and psychologically okay. And when we are sure she's okay,release her and keep her under observation,just in case.</p><p><br/></p><p>"But it wasn't her fault", we know. And accountability doesn't necessarily have to mean imprisonment and hard labour.</p><p><br/></p><p>In summary, she should take responsibility for the lives lost. </p><p><br/></p><p>And you may wonder,can compassion and justice coexist?? Yes,it should. That's why she should not be thrown into prison to rot and suffer a relapse </p><p><br/></p><p>And no, compassion should not override justice</p>
