You don't just read the story—you live it. You celebrate victories, mourn losses, and become a silent spectator in the lives of people who don't even exist. You watch characters grow from weak to powerful, broken to healed. Every chapter builds a movie inside your mind, one no director could ever fully recreate because it belongs to you. Then one day, you hear the announcement: "It's being adapted into a movie." Excitement comes first. Finally, I'll get to see this world come alive. I'll see the places I've imagined, hear the dialogue I've read countless times, and watch my favorite characters step off the page and onto the screen. Then the disappointment begins. It starts with something small. The actor doesn't quite match the image I've carried in my head. I don't complain. After all, no one can cast my imagination. Then a few scenes are removed. That's understandable. Books are longer than films, and not everything can make the final cut. Then the writers change parts of the story to make it more appealing to a wider audience. I sigh... but I accept it. The main plot is still there. Then something happens. The scenes that made the book unforgettable—the quiet conversations, the emotional moments, the details that gave the story its soul—are gone. I keep watching anyway. How much worse could it get? Then the characters themselves begin to change. Not necessarily for the worse, but into people they were never written to be. Their personalities no longer match the pages I fell in love with. And suddenly I'm left wondering: Is this really an adaptation of the same book I read? It's more than disappointment. It almost feels as though the memory of the book has been altered. Of course, not every adaptation is bad. Some are genuinely excellent. Some preserve the heart of the story even if they have to sacrifice certain scenes. I understand that adaptations are exactly that—adaptations, not copies. Not every chapter can fit into two hours, and not everything written on a page can realistically be brought to life on a screen. But it does make me wonder: Should every book be adapted at all? Can some stories simply remain books? Part of what makes reading magical is that every reader creates a different version of the story. Every face, every setting, every emotion is uniquely theirs. Once an adaptation exists, those personal images slowly begin to disappear, replaced by a version everyone now shares. It reminds me of We Were Liars by E. Lockhart. Before I even opened the first chapter, I discovered there was already a television adaptation. It was actually very well done—but because of that, I never experienced the book first. I sometimes wonder what readers felt before seeing it on screen, and what people who only watch adaptations miss. They'll know the story, but they'll never know the quiet intimacy of discovering it page by page. Now I see series like Shatter Me, The Boys of Tommen, Off-Campus, Fourth wing, the love hypothesis and so many others being adapted. Part of me is excited. Another part is afraid. Will they preserve the emotions that made me love these stories, or will they reshape them into something almost unrecognizable? Maybe that's why I have such mixed feelings about adaptations. I love movies. I love TV shows. I love books.
